Carswell expresses his appreciation for the compliment to him by Hanford requesting that Carswell ask for the appointment for the inspection of his units.

A letter addressed to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from R. N. Grisham, Grisham & Grisham, Attorneys At Law, Eastland, Texas, dated February 24, 1941. Grisham acknowledges his receipt of the letter from Carswell requesting the names of other county officers. Grisham informs Carswell that Rev. Jones W. Weathers will cooperate with him in this matter and that the whiskey interests have withdrawn from "this" county except for the wet drug stores.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from R. N. Grisham, Attorney at Law, Eastland, Texas, dated March 17, 1941. Grisham confirms that their representative has promised to vote for H. B. 373 but that they have had no expression from Senator Smith.

A letter addressed to Major Thomas Carswell, Commanding 10th Battalion, from Major R. H. Hansford, Commanding 15th Battalion, The Texas Defense Guard, Ranger, Texas, dated April 28, 1941. Hansford asks Carswell to request the appointment as inspector of the 15th Battalion which Hansford commands. The reverse side includes date received stamp of LOCAL BOARD NO. 1, FEDERAL BLDG., P. O. BOX 1721, APR 29 1941, ABILENE, TAYLOR CO., TEXAS.

A letter addressed to Tommie Carswell, Post Commander, American Legion, Abilene, Texas, from R. H. Hansford, Major, The Texas Defense Guard, 15th Battalion Headquarters, Ranger, Texas, dated March 14, 1941. Hansford makes a request for assistance from Carswell to obtain a hostess position for a World War Veteran's unremarried widow, Mrs. Annie Laura Cooper Jensen, formerly a Ranger resident but who has been living in Abilene "trying to educate her son at McMurry College". The reverse side includes handwritten notes and the name of Sgt. Wheeler, Battery F 189 F A.

The back of the photograph proclaims, "Disking vetch and rye cover crop, fertilized with 220 lbs. per acre of superphosphate, in 60 acre orchard. Cover crop planted first of October 1944. After being disked the residue left on the surface of the soil conserves moisture and reduces run-off and erosion. This land formerly was in peanuts; peach trees were planted after cow peas had been grown 2 years. Cover crop clipping best yielded 10.1 tons per acre of green matter."

Photograph of the combining of vetch and Abruzzi rye for seed on the former idle land. Last year Bermal Hickman had 150 acres of vetch that grazed 130 head of cattle from November 20 to March 20. He said that the crop could have carried twice as many cattle. He estimates his yield of vetch seed, from 40 acres combined, at 60,000 pounds. He practices crop rotation, deffered grazing on 600 acres, trashy tillings and all fields that should be are terraced. He farms 780 acres under a 5 year cash lease with E. P. Kilgore, Brownwood, the owner. On the tractor are, left and right, Malcolm McKeehan, Boss (Bill) McKeehan and their father, an employee of Hickman's. TX-43, 108.

Mr. Alexander had a total of 112 acres of vetch, 60 acres of which was in orchard. Fourteen acres were saved for seed. Vetch in orchard was planted Sept. 29 and fertilized with superphosphate at rate of 240# per acre. Average green tonnage: 10.1 of which 90% was vetch."

Next year, Maples plans to use a 4-row strip with 2 rows of crotolaria on the outside of two rows of peas. Crop residue is from last year's strips of sorghum. Peanuts on the field last year yielded 24 bushels per acre. The 74 acre field is all planted on the contour and stripped for wind erosion. 30 acres are protected with 2 rows of peas plus a row of sorghum on each side; 5 acres with 4 row strips of peas; 19 acres with 4 row strips of sorghum; 20 acres with 4 row strips of of crotolaria. Peas and crotolaria were fertilized with 100 pounds super phospate per acre. TX-41-302.

The four rows of sorghum planted alternately with 8 rows of peanuts were severely grazed and a slight amount of wind erosion is evident although it is not serious. Wind erosion control strips on peanut fields should not be grazed and tall growing vegetation should be left to afford the fullest possible protection to the sandy soils. TX-40-893-B.

Green Tonnage: Unfertilized: 3,079# rye, 103# vetch, Fertilized: 3,511# rye, 8,494# vetch. Total: Unfertilized, 1.59 tons per acre, Fertilized, 6.01 tons per acre. (The increase was 432# rye, 8,391# vetch). At 14 cents per lb. for vetch seed and 4 ½ cents per lb. for rye seed, the unfertilized crop amounted to $18.87 per acre. On fertilized land the per acre return was $96.88. The fertilizer made an increase in profit of $76.46 per acre.”
