Tebessa, Algeria

Photograph of El-Ma-el-Abiode on a broad valley plain about 20 miles south of Tebessa in a region where an olive tree cannot now be found, are the ruins of a very large olive press, showing splendid construction. It was designed to receive and compress large quantities of olives expeditiously. The ruins show that 6 large presses with base stones 3 feet in diameter were used here. It strikes one with amazement to contemplate what this elaborate press for compressing oil from olives implies in olive culture for this valley plain.
