Velvet hat

Hat of gray velvet. The domed crown is made from six segments of gray velvet, sewn in bands extending from front to back. The brim of matching felt is set off-center to the crown, giving more brim in front. The front of the brim turns up somewhat and has an embellishment of long dark brown coque feathers extending along the brim from a dark brown velvet bow set on the underside of the brim. Lined in a bronze brown crepe with a headband of brown grosgrain ribbon. A small contrasting stitch on the headband indicates the front of the hat. Retailer's label: Made to order hat / Bergdorf / Goodman / Fifth Ave at 58th Measurements: 31 cm. front to back; 28 cm. side to side; 13 cm. from top of crown to lowest point of brim.

Wedding hat

Cloche style hat of pink straw with mauve satin embroidered band. Donated with A) Wedding dress of ecru chiffon with embroidered net waist, collar and sleeve cuffs. Long sleeves. Two-tiered scalloped skirt. Drawstring closure at neckline ending in gold spherical beads with amber rhinestones. Ivory layer under waist embroidered net has pin tucks and matches cuffs of sleeves.

Hat

Hay of gray "horsehair". The crown is of woven gray "horsehair", thin material with concentric thicker bands within. Around the base of the crown is a wide blue velvet ribbon, and on the front of the crown is an arrangement of artificial flowers of velvet in pinks, blues and greens. The wide, oval brim is set off-center, widest at sides, wide at front and very shallow at back. The edge is wired, giving it a "wavy" edge. The hat is unlined, with a wide band of satin ribbon around the inside base of the crown. There are no labels or marks in the hat.

Cloche hat

Cloche hat of blue-green velvet. An early example of the cloche hat, it has a narrow up-turned brim. All around the crown is floral decoration carried out in beading, appliqué, and embroidery with thin lines of gold thread sewn throughout. The edges of the brim are similarly decorated. Remains of silk lining. No labels. Measurements: 24 cm across at longest point; 22.5 cm across on narrow side; 15 cm high from base of brim to top of crown.

Straw cloche

Cloche hat of burnt sienna-colored straw. The high domed crown of woven straw is decorated with flowers and leaves formed by embroidering and couching using fine brown and cream cloth rather than thread. The brown fabric flowers have beaded centers. The very narrow brim of matching straw is turned up at front, edged with brown fabric, and bound with dark golden yellow threads. Lined in fine black cloth through which can be seen the inner stitching of the "embroidery". No labels. Measurements: 23 cm. front to back; 21 cm. side to side; 18 cm. from top of crown to lowest point of brim.

Hat

Hat of burnt orange/rust colored straw. The domed crown is of finely woven burnt orange/rust colored straw with secondary horizontal bands of slightly larger strands woven into the base material. At its base, the crown curves in, under, down and out, creating a "mushroom" effect, with the main part of the crown as the "cap", and a smaller section of "stalk" below. The oval, asymmetric brim is of the same woven straw and creates a smaller brim in front. The brim is edged in coral colored silk. Unlined. No labels or tags. Opera Coat

Opera coat of black velour with ecru floss embroidery. Rows of embroidery are embellished with knots and outside edges of rows are knotted with 1-1/2" loops of embroidery floss. Pumps of black satin and black kid leather. Vamp with cutwork in leather forming a modified sunray or comet design centered on circular metal button set with rhinestones. Velvet hat

Hat in Renaissance inspired style of red purple/plum silk velvet. The hat has elements of a turban and beret. It is made with an oversized crown of velvet gathered, caught, and draped, pulling under and then back out to form a brim that does not extend as far as the billows of fabric from the crown. The fabric is embellished with running lines of matching chenille and clusters of silver-gray painted wooden beads. Lined in black satin.
