Spindled and Hollow Spars (open access)

Spindled and Hollow Spars

"The most usual method of arriving at the maximum amount of spindling or hollowing out permissible in the case of any particular spar section is by trial and error, a process which is apt to become laborious in the absence of good guessing - or luck. The following tables have been got out with the object of making it possible to arrive with certainty at a suitable section at the first attempt" (p. 1).

Aeronautic Instruments (open access)

Aeronautic Instruments

"The development of aeronautic instruments. Vibrations, rapid changes of the conditions of flight and of atmospheric conditions, influence of the air stream all call for particular design and construction of the individual instruments. This is shown by certain examples of individual instruments and of various classes of instruments for measuring pressure, change of altitude, temperature, velocity, inclination and turning or combinations of these" (p. 1).

Remarks on Building of Low-Powered Airplanes (open access)

Remarks on Building of Low-Powered Airplanes

"If the low-powered airplane is to be used advantageously by private individuals, the most important consideration is a smaller fuel consumption and, hence, a lower engine power. From experiments with gliders, it appears entirely possible, by utilizing ascending winds (on the weather side of mountains and those generated by the heat of the sun) and by employing engine flight intermittently, as required to fly long distances over land" (p. 1).

Choice of Profile for the Wings of an Airplane Part 2

This report gives a general method for drawing airplane profiles. This method is useful, but it leads to a somewhat laborious drawing which becomes quite complicated when we take a transformation function having terms of a high degree.

Travel of the Center of Pressure of Airfoils Transversely to the Air Stream (open access)

Travel of the Center of Pressure of Airfoils Transversely to the Air Stream

The experiments here described were performed for the purpose of obtaining the essential facts concerning the distribution of the air force along the span. We did not follow, however, the time-consuming method of point-to-point measurements of the pressure distribution on the wing surfaces, but determined directly the moment of mean force about an axis passing through the middle of the span parallel to the direction of flight.

Spontaneous Combustion of Hydrogen (open access)

Spontaneous Combustion of Hydrogen

It is shown by the author's experiments that hydrogen which escapes to the atmosphere through openings in the system may burn spontaneously if it contains dust. Purely thermal reasoning can not account for the combustion. It seems to be rather an electrical ignition. In order to determine whether the cause of the spontaneous ignition was thermo-chemical, thermo-mechanical, or thermo-electrical, the experiments in this paper were performed.

Concrete Airship Sheds at Orly, France Part 1: General Aspect of the Problem, Basic Principles of the Final Project, Principal Structural Elements

This report details the contest to design and build concrete airship hangers. The difficulty lies in the magnitude of the absolute dimensions. An airship shed must withstand two principal types of stresses: those resulting from its own weight and those due to the wind. This report discusses both problems in detail.
