Combustion of Liquid Fuels in Diesel Engine (open access)

Combustion of Liquid Fuels in Diesel Engine

Hitherto, definite specifications have always been made for fuel oils and they have been classified as more or less good or non-utilizable. The present aim, however, is to build Diesel engines capable of using even the poorest liquid fuels and especially the waste products of the oil industry, without special chemical or physical preparation.

Computative examination of bending strength of girders originally curved and subjected to longitudinal compression

This report examines the stipulation contained in the 1918 BLV, that a girder subjected to longitudinal compression under the influence of half of the specified breaking load, along with Euler bending safety with an initial deflection of 1/200 of the length of the girder can, at most, be subjected to half the stipulated breaking strength.

Concrete Airship Sheds at Orly, France Part 1: General Aspect of the Problem, Basic Principles of the Final Project, Principal Structural Elements

This report details the contest to design and build concrete airship hangers. The difficulty lies in the magnitude of the absolute dimensions. An airship shed must withstand two principal types of stresses: those resulting from its own weight and those due to the wind. This report discusses both problems in detail.

Cooling of Air-Cooled Engines by Forced Circulation of Air (open access)

Cooling of Air-Cooled Engines by Forced Circulation of Air

This report presents the results of experiments on aerodynamic fuselages in which an air current is forced into the nose of the fuselage by the action of several fans revolving with the propeller. The air is then guided by special deflectors which cause it to flow along the exhaust pipes and cylinders and then, after having been utilized, pass out through annular ports. This system of cooling worked perfectly at all speeds.

Deflection of Propeller Blades While Running (open access)

Deflection of Propeller Blades While Running

"The forces acting on the blades of a propeller proceed from the mass of the propeller and the resistance of the surrounding medium. The magnitude, direction and point of application of the resultant to the propeller blade is of prime importance for the strength calculation. Since it was obviously impracticable to bring any kind of testing device near the revolving propeller, not so much on account of the element of danger as on account of the resulting considerable disturbance of the air flow, the deflection in both cases was photographically recorded and subsequently measured at leisure" (p. 1).

Effect of Periodic Changes of Angle of Attack on Behavior of Airfoils (open access)

Effect of Periodic Changes of Angle of Attack on Behavior of Airfoils

This report presents the results of a series of experiments, which gave some quantitative results on the effect of periodic changes in the direction of the relative air flow against airfoils. The first series of experiments concerned how the angle of attack of the wing model was changed by causing the latter to oscillate about an axis parallel to the span and at right angles to the air flow. The second series embraced all the experiments in which the direction of the air flow itself was periodically changed.

Experiments With a Wing Model From Which the Boundary Is Removed by Suction

The present report deals with a series of tests made for the purpose of improving flow conditions about wings by applying the suction principle (increase of the lift coefficient and reduction of the drag about very thick wing sections). Though not conclusive, the report contains interesting results.

Ignition and Combustion Phenomena in Diesel Engines (open access)

Ignition and Combustion Phenomena in Diesel Engines

Evidences were found that neither gasification nor vaporization of the injected fuel occurs before ignition; also that the hydrogen coefficient has no significance. However the knowledge of the ignition point and of the "time lag" is important. After ignition, the combustion proceeds in a series of reactions, the last of which at least are now known.

Ignition Points and Combustion Reactions in Diesel Engines: Part 1

The question of whether the fuel should be adapted to the engine or whether it is possible to improve equipment such as carburetors and engines so that as much of the crude oil as possible may be used without further transformation is examined in this report. Various ignition points and fuel mixtures are investigated in this regard.

Inherent Stability of Helicopters (open access)

Inherent Stability of Helicopters

The equilibrium, in still air, of a "stationary" helicopter (i.e., of one having neither vertical nor translational velocity, but a tendency to remain practically motionless within restricted limits of space) presents some difficulty in practice and justifies a theoretical investigation of its "inherent stability," i.e., independent of the pilot.
