From Introduction: "The Bureau of Mines since its establishment has always taken an active interest in the utilization of lignite and in the development of the lignite deposits of the United States. Extensive lignite fields occur in the west central States, notably in North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Texas; there are smaller areas in several other Sates, some of which are widely separated."

From Introduction: "The Mexia-Powell fault fields have long held the attention of the oil industry, and this report proposes to present information on these fields and to interpret it for the consideration and guidance of all persons concerned in further development of the area. Detailed study of this field was made primarily to obtain a better working knowledge of the major features, involving structural conditions, the character and nature of the Woodbine pay sand, and the source of water."

From Prefactory Statement: "In this bulletin are presented the results obtained in the first two phases of the work outlined above. The bulletin is in two parts. The first part describes the methods of mining and milling used, suggests a standard method of sampling finished graphite, and describes a rapid and convenient method of analysis developed at the Pittsburgh station of the Bureau of Mines, to which has been assigned the analytical and microscopic work. The second part describes experiments on the concentration and milling of graphite, which were made at the Salt Lake City, Utah, station."
