The exposition celebrates the 300th anniversary of the beginning for the Nation. In 1607 John Smith, with other adventurers, set up a stockade on a peninsula of Powhatan's River (afterwards called the James), and named the settlement James City or Jamestown. From this grew Virginia and eventually, the United States. The site of the Exposition is of great natural beauty: it overlooks the historic waters of Hampton Roads, and around it cluster the populous cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Newport News."
