Elk Building, Marshall, Texas

Color tinted halftone postcard of the Elk Building, Marshall, Texas, 212 N. Washington, Ave. A man stands in the doorway of the commercial space on the first floor. To the left of the shopfront is the narrow entrance door to the stairs leading to the Elks lodge rooms. The striped awnings on the first floor and on the building to the right are retracted. There is a recessed bay window on the second level above the shopfront, and on the third level a semicircular recess, or exedra. Printed on the top of the image is the title "1131 Elk Building, Marshall, Texas" and "Published by Mathewson Drug Co." On the back the postmark date is 1908. Printed in the lower left corner of the back is the CT Chicago symbol of the Curt Teich Co. The card was addressed to Miss N. Brown, San Antonio, Tex.

Washington, Ave. The buildings on either side of this building have been artifically removed from the image and the building is surrounded by a uniform blue color, with pale orange adjacent to the first floor level. A man stands in the doorway of the commercial space on the first floor and a selection of rocking chairs and straight chairs have been placed on the front edge of the sidewalk. To the left of the shopfront is the narrow entrance door to the stairs leading to the Elks lodge rooms. A decorative grating with the word "Elks" in the center is above the door. The striped awning on the first floor is retracted. There is a recessed bay window on the second level above the shopfront, and on the third level a semicircular recess, or exedra. The enclosed document, signed by V. Warner, does say that the "pension has been allowed at $16.00 per month from June 6, 1906."

Handwritten letter from Chester Nimitz to his grandfather in Fredericksburg. Nimitz, writing from China, mentions leaving Manila just as a cholera outbreak occurred. Nimitz mentions his travel plans for he interior of China. He mentions the Boxer Rebellion briefly and various news on some other classmates in the fleet. He also describes a malfunction with one of his torpedoes. Between the time Nimitz started this letter and mailed it, he took an inland trip to Peking, which he describes. He also mentions going to Korea and escorting members of the Taft Party (including Alice Roosevelt).

[Three Bank Notes for J. E. M. Yates]

Three bank notes prepared for J. E. M. Yates. The first acknowledges that J. M. Davis will pay him $15 with an interest rate of 10% per annum as of January 1, 1906. The second note is dated October 1, 1906 and says that P. C. Davis "one year after date, I, we, or either of us, promise to pay...twenty seven and 45/100 Dollars." The third note is dated January 16, 1902 and stipulates that P. C. Davis "On Oct 1st 1902 after date I, we, or, either of us, promise to pay to the order of J. E. M. Yates" $18 with ten percent interest.

Two letters and an envelope discussing ranch matters. The first letter is addressed to "Uncle" and signed "Bof Bingham," discusses news of a cattle ranch and is dated June 2, 1918. The second letter is on Sayles Bros. & McAlpine letterhead, addressed to "John" and dated July 2, 1908. The envelope is addressed to "Mr. Uncle McAlpine" and has a note written on it that reads, "This explains itself. It may be a bluff and may not. He has done nothing yet."
