This article focuses on Dika Newlin (1923-2006), an eccentric individual who was a musical prodigy in her early life and deemed a teenaged protégé of Arnold Schoenberg. Dika took an interest in punk rock later in life, and even joined a punk rock band. The author seeks to understand Dika's transition from protégé to punk rocker by describing some of her various phases as scholar, pianist, composer, and militant iconoclast. This paper was presented at the Music Library Association Conference in Denton, TX, on October 3, 2014.

This narrative centers on the start of the Texas chapter of the Music Library Association. The author gives the history and events that led up to the creation of the chapter, highlighting individuals that played a large role. This document played a part in a presentation given on behalf of the Oral History Committee at the national meeting of the Music Library Association in Dallas, Texas in 2012.

This book chapter presents the Charles Lloyd Quartet’s performance at the 1967 Tallinn Jazz Festival, which broke the “stagecraft” of prior jazz diplomacy with the Soviet Union, and proceeded despite numerous official attempts to derail it, as a case study in the effectiveness of Willis Conover’s approach over the twelve years since his Voice of America program began in 1955.
