"The Smoking Gun": Evidence that Vladimir Ussachevsky used Chinese Timbres as the Basis for his Electronic Music

This paper was originally presented by Carl Rahkonen at the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) Conference on April 3, 2008 in Salt Lake City, Utah. This paper includes details about Vladimir Ussachevsky, a pioneer in the proliferation of electronic music. It also contains biographical information about Ussachevsky, as well as his archival materials. The author attempts to prove that Ussachevsky used Chinese Timbres as the basis for his electronic music.

Serge Jaroff and His Don Cossack Choir: The Refugees Who Took the World by Storm

This article discusses the history of the Don Cossack Choir which was established and conducted by Serge Jaroff while in a Turkish internment camp in 1920. Once liberated, they concertized throughout the non-Soviet world and enjoyed long-term success. However, the choir has received little scholarly attention, much of it in Dutch and Russian research.

Schoenberg's Punk Rocker: The Radical Transformations of Dika Newlin

This article focuses on Dika Newlin (1923-2006), an eccentric individual who was a musical prodigy in her early life and deemed a teenaged protégé of Arnold Schoenberg. Dika took an interest in punk rock later in life, and even joined a punk rock band. The author seeks to understand Dika's transition from protégé to punk rocker by describing some of her various phases as scholar, pianist, composer, and militant iconoclast. This paper was presented at the Music Library Association Conference in Denton, TX, on October 3, 2014.
