Tomographic mapping of the nanoscale water-filled pore structure in corroded borosilicate glass (open access)

Tomographic mapping of the nanoscale water-filled pore structure in corroded borosilicate glass

This article applies cryo-based atom probe tomography to directly reveal the water-solid interface and hydrated corrosion layers making up the nanoscale porous structure of a corroded borosilicate glass in its native aqueous environment. The analysis includes morphology and compositional mapping of the inner gel/glass interface, isolation of a tomographic sub-volume of the tortuous water-filled gel, and comparison of the gel structure with simulations.

Topic Identification Using Wikipedia Graph Centrality

This paper presents a method for automatic topic identification using a graph-centrality algorithm applied to an encyclopedic graph derived from Wikipedia. When tested on a data set with manually assigned topics, the system is found to significantly improve over a simpler baseline that does not make use of the external encyclopedic knowledge.

A Tough, Water-Resistant, High Bond Strength Adhesive Derived from Soybean Meal and Flexible Hyper-Branched Aminated Starch

This article highlights the development of a flexible long-chain starch with a hyper-branched structure (HD), and incorporating it with SM and a crosslinking agent to prepare a novel SM adhesive. Results showed that this adhesive exhibited both excellent water resistance and enhanced toughness. The wet bond strength of plywood fabricated using this adhesive was 354.5% higher than that of SM adhesive.

Tribological Properties of (EN AW-AlCu4MgSi(A)) Aluminium Alloy Surface Layer After Ball Burnishing

Article presents the tribological properties of (EN AW-AlCu4MgSi(A)) aluminium alloy surface layer after ball burnishing. EN AW-AlCu4MgSi(A) aluminium alloy is widely used as a structural material in aerospace and automotive applications. The authors have subjected it to grinding, polishing and ball burnishing. The authors have performed ball-on-disk tribological tests. We have also determined normalized 3D roughness parameters. High surface smoothness turns out to be obtainable. Favorable effect of the ball burnishing on the tribological properties of the alloy are seen. Results will be presented at the International Scientific Conference BALTTRIB, 2015.

Tuning the temperature range of superelastic Ni-Ti alloys for elastocaloric cooling via thermal processing

Article describes how caloric cooling enlisting solid-state refrigerants is potentially a promising eco-friendly alternative to conventional cooling based on vapor compression. Here, the authors have explored tuning the operation temperature range of Ni50.8Ti49.2 for elastocaloric cooling. In particular, they have studied the effect of thermal treatments (a.k.a. aging) on the transformation temperature, superelasticity, and elastocaloric effects of Ni50.8Ti49.2 shape memory alloy tubes.
