Presentation for a panel discussing UNT Libraries' journey to address systemic and systematic vestiges of oppression of socially and politically minoritized populations. For this purpose, the Collection Assessment Department is planning on evaluating the UNT Libraries’ collections, identifying sources of diverse materials, and connecting with our communities. They will conduct focus groups and pilot a method on one aspect of their collections. For this panel discussion, self-selected members of an advisory board for this project will discuss their individual motivations for and concerns about the project. It was presented at the 2022 Cross Timbers Library Collaborative Conference which was held virtually on July 29, 2022.

This initiative uses findings documented in recent studies addressing information seeking behaviors of transgender persons and their perceptions of the library to provide more equitable access to their services and collections. The presentation shares the needs assessment, collection development process, promotion and outreach, and next steps related to this initiative in hopes that other libraries can modify them to serve marginalized populations in their communities.
