3D-printed and injection molded polymer matrix composites with 2D layered materials (open access)

3D-printed and injection molded polymer matrix composites with 2D layered materials

This article reports on a study where 2D TMDs (MoS₂ and WS₂) and the 3D allotrope of carbon and graphite were incorporated into acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) matrices in order to form polymer matrix composites (PMCs). The multipronged analysis described in this study was motivated by the purpose to fuse together topics of low-cost, additive manufacturing with 2D layered materials, and studying their ensuing mechanical and tribological properties.

Anomalous thermo-osmotic conversion performance of ionic covalent-organic-framework membranes in response to charge variations (open access)

Anomalous thermo-osmotic conversion performance of ionic covalent-organic-framework membranes in response to charge variations

Authors of the article systematically investigated how the membrane charge populations affect permselectivity by decoupling their effects from the impact of the pore structure using a multivariate strategy for constructing covalent-organic-framework membranes. The complex interplay between pore-pore interactions in response to charge variations for ion transport across the upscaled nanoporous membranes helps explain the obtained results. This study has far-reaching implications for the rational design of ionic membranes to augment energy extraction rather than intuitively focusing on achieving high densities.

Approaching Bounded Rationality: From Quantum Probability to Criticality

This article discusses the decision-making model (DMM), a paradigmatic instance of criticality, which deals with bounded rationality issues in a similar way as quantum probability (QP), generating choices that cannot be accounted by classical probability (CP). This work may contribute to considering criticality as another possible fundamental pillar in order to improve the understanding of cognition and of quantum mechanics.

Assessing distribution shifts and ecophysiological characteristics of the only Antarctic winged midge under climate change scenarios (open access)

Assessing distribution shifts and ecophysiological characteristics of the only Antarctic winged midge under climate change scenarios

Article integrating ecophysiological information with the development of new high-resolution climatic layers for Antarctica, to better understand how the distribution of P. steinenii may respond to change over the next century under different IPCC climate change scenarios. The authors conclude that the species has the potential to expand its distribution to include parts of the west and east coasts of the Antarctic Peninsula and even coastal ice-free areas in parts of continental Antarctica. The authors also propose P. steinenii as an effective native sentinel and indicator species of climate change in the Antarctic.

A Bayesian Rate Ratio Effect Size to Quantify Intervention Effects for Count Data in Single Case Experimental Research

This article formulates a within-subject Bayesian rate ratio effect size (BRR) for autocorrelated count data that would obviate the need for small sample corrections. The authors illustrate this within-subject effect size using real data for an ABAB design and provide codes for practitioners who may want to compute BRR.
