Spatial and temporal localization of SPIRRIG and WAVE/SCAR reveal roles for these proteins in actin-mediated root hair development (open access)

Spatial and temporal localization of SPIRRIG and WAVE/SCAR reveal roles for these proteins in actin-mediated root hair development

Article shows that SPIRRIG (SPI), a beige and Chediak Higashi domain-containing protein involved in membrane trafficking, and BRK1 and SCAR2, subunits of the WAVE/SCAR (W/SC) actin nucleating promoting complex, display polarized localizations in Arabidopsis thaliana root hairs during distinct developmental stages. Authors' work uncovers a role for SPI in facilitating actin-dependent root hair development in Arabidopsis through pathways that might intersect with W/SC.

FlexiChain 3.0: Distributed Ledger Technology-Based Intelligent Transportation for Vehicular Digital Asset Exchange in Smart Cities

Article describes how, due to the enormous amounts of data being generated between users, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are complex Cyber-Physical Systems that necessitate a reliable and safe infrastructure. In this work, the authors explore Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and collect data about consensus algorithms and their applicability to be used in the IoV as the backbone of ITS.

Tuning the temperature range of superelastic Ni-Ti alloys for elastocaloric cooling via thermal processing (open access)

Tuning the temperature range of superelastic Ni-Ti alloys for elastocaloric cooling via thermal processing

Article describes how caloric cooling enlisting solid-state refrigerants is potentially a promising eco-friendly alternative to conventional cooling based on vapor compression. Here, the authors have explored tuning the operation temperature range of Ni50.8Ti49.2 for elastocaloric cooling. In particular, they have studied the effect of thermal treatments (a.k.a. aging) on the transformation temperature, superelasticity, and elastocaloric effects of Ni50.8Ti49.2 shape memory alloy tubes.

Exposure to diesel exhaust particulates and desert sand dust generates microvesicle particles and platelet-activating factor agonists (open access)

Exposure to diesel exhaust particulates and desert sand dust generates microvesicle particles and platelet-activating factor agonists

The authors address the editor in their article, stating that the majority of the general population, particularly, servicemen and women deployed across the globe are exposed to various airborne hazards, including diesel exhaust particulate (DEP) and desert sand dust (DSD). Studies, including the author's study, have shown that exposure to ROS-generating pro-oxidative stressors ranging from environmental carcinogens to pollutants, including cigarette smoke, produces a class of potent phospholipid mediators, Platelet-activating factor (PAF) and PAF-like agonists via oxidative cleavage of lipid membrane glycerophosphocholines (GPCs).

Molecular Simulation Strategies for Understanding the Degradation Mechanisms of Acrylic Polymers (open access)

Molecular Simulation Strategies for Understanding the Degradation Mechanisms of Acrylic Polymers

Article describes how acrylic polymers, commonly used in paints, can degrade over time by several different chemical and physical mechanisms, depending on structure and exposure conditions. In this work, the authors studied the effects of different degradation mechanisms and agents on properties of acrylic polymers found in artists’ acrylic paints for the first time using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations.

A Remarkable Difference in Pharmacokinetics of Fluorinated Versus Iodinated Photosensitizers Derived from Chlorophyll-a and a Direct Correlation between the Tumor Uptake and Anti-Cancer Activity (open access)

A Remarkable Difference in Pharmacokinetics of Fluorinated Versus Iodinated Photosensitizers Derived from Chlorophyll-a and a Direct Correlation between the Tumor Uptake and Anti-Cancer Activity

Article says that to investigate and compare the pharmacokinetic profile and anti-cancer activity of fluorinated and iodinated photosensitizers (PSs), the 3-(1′-(o-fluorobenzyloxy)ethyl pyropheophorbide and the corresponding meta-(m-) and para (p-) fluorinated analogs (methyl esters and carboxylic acids) were synthesized. According to the authors, the nature of the delivery vehicle and tumor types showed a significant difference in uptake and long-term cure by photodynamic therapy (PDT), especially in the iodinated PS.

Room and Elevated Temperature Sliding Friction and Wear Behavior of Al0.3CoFeCrNi and Al0.3CuFeCrNi2 High Entropy Alloys (open access)

Room and Elevated Temperature Sliding Friction and Wear Behavior of Al0.3CoFeCrNi and Al0.3CuFeCrNi2 High Entropy Alloys

Article discusses how, in this study, processing–structure–property relations were systematically investigated at room and elevated temperatures for two FCC Al0.3CoFeCrNi and Al0.3CuFeCrNi2 high-entropy alloys (HEAs), also known as complex concentrated alloys (CCAs), prepared by conventional arc-melting. It was determined that both alloys exhibit FCC single-phase solid solution structure. Micro-indentation and sliding wear tests were performed to study the hardness and tribological behavior and mechanisms at room and elevated temperatures.

Acetaldehyde oxidation at elevated pressure (open access)

Acetaldehyde oxidation at elevated pressure

A detailed chemical kinetic model for oxidation of CH3CHO at intermediate to high temperature and elevated pressure has been developed and evaluated by comparing predictions to novel high-pressure flow reactor experiments as well as shock tube ignition delay measurements and jet-stirred reactor data from literature. The flow reactor experiments were conducted with a slightly lean CH3CHO/O2 mixture highly diluted in N2 at 600–900 K and pressures of 25 and 100 bar. This is the accepted manuscript version of the published article.

Did Anything Good Come Out of the Pandemic? COVID-19-Stress Induced Self-Regulatory Sustainable Apparel Consumption among the Millennials in the U.S.

Authors of the article proposed and tested a conceptual model delineating the relationships between COVID-19 stress, commitment to the environment, and intentions for sustainable apparel consumption in terms of intentions for purchasing sustainable apparel and divesting apparel. The authors recommend the sustainable apparel brands and marketers promote how sustainable apparel consumption can protect the environment to make the environment and human beings less susceptible to the future outbreaks of pandemics.
