Corrosion Inhibition Effect of Pyridine-2-Thiol for Brass in An Acidic Environment (open access)

Corrosion Inhibition Effect of Pyridine-2-Thiol for Brass in An Acidic Environment

Article states that the inhibitive performance of pyridine-2-thiol added to a corrosive solution was investigated for brass using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy showed defect free and less scale formation for the inhibited surface but the bare brass surface had larger amounts of scale formation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy was used to investigate surface chemical composition and inhibitor structural changes over time.

Encroachment order and spatial patterns of broad-leaf tree species in the naturalization of a Cunninghamia lanceolata plantation

Authors of the article state that the aim of this study was to understand the encroachment order, spatial patterns, interspecific associations, and species diversity of a Cunninghamia lanceolata plantation and to provide context for how to improve the spatial structure of C. lanceolata plantations. Their results show that the encroachment of broad-leaf trees into the C. lanceolata plantation followed a clear successional sequence of tree community assembly: intolerant tree species encroachment first, such as Alniphyllum fortunei and Liquidambar formosana, encroached; neutral tree species then encroachment, such as Daphniphyllum oldhamii and Schima superba, and shade-tolerant tree species encroachment last, such as Castanopsis eyrei and Castanopsis tibetana.

Gene-based association tests using GWAS summary statistics and incorporating eQTL

Article proposes a powerful and computationally efficient gene-based association test, called Overall. Using extended Simes procedure, Overall aggregates information from three types of traditional gene-based association tests and also incorporates expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) information into a gene-based association test using GWAS summary statistics. The results show that this newly developed method can identify more significant genes than other methods.

Inkjet-printed graphene’s electrical response to external gas flow for sensing applications (open access)

Inkjet-printed graphene’s electrical response to external gas flow for sensing applications

Article discusses how understanding gas flow behavior is crucial in the ability of materials to sense toxic gasses for environmental, industrial, safety, agriculture, and related applications. In their study, the authors measure the electrical transport characteristics of ink jet printed graphene to incoming gas flow, specifically to N2 and CO2. This work serves as a prototypical platform to study the device characteristics of solution processed graphene and other 2D materials for more exotic gases in the future for gas sensing applications.

Instructional Models for Course-Based Research Experience (CRE) Teaching

This article presents a study that was done over a period of 3 years to explicate the instructional processes involved in teaching an undergraduate course-based research experience (CRE). The study presented here delineated a set of specific instructional practices used by active CRE instructors and modeled the relations between the use of these practices and specified outcomes. The resultant educational models should provide clarification of the ways in which the aims of CRE can be effectively achieved by instructors.

Scalable, top-down optical lithography for electrically contacting monolayer crystallites of vapor grown WSe2 for gas sensing applications

Article discusses how semiconducting two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered a great deal of interest owing to their large surface-to-volume ratios compared to traditional three-dimensional (3D) semiconductors, and focuses on a specific TMD; tungsten diselenide (WSe₂). In their study, the authors demonstrate the halide-assisted low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (HA-LPCVD) of high crystalline-quality, monolayer WSe₂.

Stability and degradation in triple cation and methyl ammonium lead iodide perovskite solar cells mediated via Au and Ag electrodes (open access)

Stability and degradation in triple cation and methyl ammonium lead iodide perovskite solar cells mediated via Au and Ag electrodes

Article focuses on the fact that there are no clear mechanisms for the interaction of electrode-induced absorber degradation pathways. Furthermore, the authors hypothesize that the formation of AgI in the PSCs, leads to corrosion of the perovskite absorber, as opposed to the benign AuI when Au electrodes are used in the solar cell stack.

Stability and degradation in triple cation and methyl ammonium lead iodide perovskite solar cells mediated viaAu andAg electrodes

Article states that perovskite solar cells (PSCs), particularly based on the methyl ammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) formulation, have been of intense interest for the past decade within the photovoltaics (PV) community, but their long-term stability under operational conditions and environmental storage are still prime challenges to be overcome towards their commercialization. The authors have conducted a comprehensive analysis on the impact of the electrode collector layer, specifically Ag and Au, on the degradation mechanism associated with the MAPbI3 and a triple cation absorber. The authors hypothesize the mechanism of degradation, arising from the Ag interaction with the absorber through the formation of AgI in the PSCs, leads to corrosion of the perovskite absorber, as opposed to the benign AuI when Au electrodes are used in the solar cell stack.
