Monitoring Usage of Open Access Long-Form Content

Presentation for NISO Virtual Conference "Long Form Content: Ebooks, Print Volumes and the Concerns of Those Who Use Both." The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation recently funded a study of the landscape of usage data for open-access scholarly monographs and an investigation of the viability of creating a data trust for sharing of usage data among stakeholders in the publishing ecosystem. In spring 2019, the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) will publish a final white paper that takes into account feedback from the community during a consultation period. This presentation, part of a NISO virtual conference (https://www.niso.org/events/2019/03/long-form-content-ebooks-print-volumes-and-concerns-those-who-use-both ), provides a summary of the main findings and proposals of the forthcoming white paper.

Mechanical property enhancement of self-bonded natural fiber material via controlling cell wall plasticity and structure (open access)

Mechanical property enhancement of self-bonded natural fiber material via controlling cell wall plasticity and structure

This article explores self-bonded natural fiber material (SNFM) as a promising alternative for plastic and wood owing to its abundant raw material resources and low environmental impact. In this study, a high-performance SNFM was developed by the comprehensive treatments for the plasticity and structure of fiber cell walls. The self-bonded mechanism for natural fiber materials was also discussed. The SNFM products showed excellent mechanical performance, which was superior to that of natural wood and plastic.

Multimodal switching of a redox-active macrocycle (open access)

Multimodal switching of a redox-active macrocycle

This article looks at molecules that can exist in multiple states with the possibility of toggling between those states based on different stimuli. They have potential for use in molecular switching or sensing applications. The coupling of two different oxidation states with two different charge-transfer states within one macrocyclic scaffold delivers up to five different optical outputs. This molecular switching manifold exploits intramolecular coupling of multiple redox active substituents within a single molecule.

Electrical and Thermal Conductivity of Polylactic Acid (PLA)-Based Biocomposites by Incorporation of Nano-Graphite Fabricated with Fused Deposition Modeling

This article describes a study to improve the electrical and thermal conductivity of the polylactic acid/wood flour/thermoplastic polyurethane composites by Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). The results showed that, when the addition amount of nano-graphite reached 25 pbw, the volume resistivity of the composites decreased to 10⁸ Ω·m, which was a significant reduction, indicating that the conductive network was already formed. It also had good thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, and thermal stability.
