This article is a study investigating acoustic characteristics of American English liquids produced by native English (NE) and native Japanese (NJ) speakers reported in Aoyama, Flege, Guion, Akahane-Yamada, and Yamada [(2004). J. Phonetics 32, 233–250]. The secondary aim of the study is to compare the acoustic nature of English liquids between native speakers and Japanese L2 speakers of English. This work was presented at the 170th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America on June 25, 2017 in Boston, MA.

This article is a review cataloging and contextualizing all of the plant genes currently known to be required for SNF in two model legume species, Medicago truncatula and Lotus japonicus, and two crop species, Glycine max (soybean) and Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean). The authors also briefly consider the future of SNF genetics in the era of pan-genomics and genome editing.

Article demonstrates direct evidence of Fe3+ and Fe2+ gradient distribution across mussel byssal cuticle threads thickness, which shows more Fe2+ inside the inner cuticle, to support the hypothesis that the cuticle is a functionally graded material with high stiffness, extensibility, and self‐healing capacity.

Article describes the results of the One Thousand Plant Transcriptomes Initiative's efforts to sequence the vegetative transcriptomes of 1,124 species that span the diversity of plants in a broad sense (Archaeplastida), including green plants (Viridiplantae), glaucophytes (Glaucophyta) and red algae (Rhodophyta).

The panelists discussed cybersecurity challenges and provided an assessment of the cybersecurity issues related to open access and big data.

In this article the density uniformity and mechanical properties of bamboo bundle veneers were systematically evaluated by the combination of light transmittance and mechanical stiffness. It was found that the number of broomings, dippings, and high-temperature heat treatments had different effects on the bamboo bundle veneers. On this basis, the uniformity of the density and mechanical properties of the bamboo scrimber (BS) that underwent hybrid paving, and the bamboo bundle laminated veneer lumber (BLVL), were analyzed.

Article presents a rigorous and systematic study of the band alignment of semiconductors in aqueous solutions by contrasting a range of hybrid explicit/implicit models against explicit atomistic simulations based on density-functional theory.

This article looks at respiratory illness in Appalachian Kentucky because it reports some of the highest rates of respiratory illness in the United States. As part of the Mountain Air Project, local youth were invited to share their perspectives on possible contributing factors to respiratory illness, and the authors undertook an exploratory study to determine the utility of photovoice to elicit such perspectives with this population. This study demonstrates the value of incorporating youth perspectives in environmental health research, and that photovoice was a valuable approach to elicit such perspectives.
