Urban edge trees: Urban form and meteorology drive elemental carbon deposition to canopies and soils
Article asserts that urban tree canopies are a significant sink for atmospheric elemental carbon (EC)--and air pollutant that is a powerful climate-forcing agent and threat to human health. The authors' findings indicate that complex configurations of roads, buildings, and vegetation produce โurban edge treesโ that contribute to heterogeneous EC deposition patterns across urban systems, with implications for greenspace planning.

On the evolving nature of c/a ratio in a hexagonal close-packed epsilon martensite phase in transformative high entropy alloys
Article studying c/a ratio and transformation volume change of h.c.p. (hexagonal close packed) epsilon martensite phase in transformative high entropy alloys (HEAs) quantified as functions of alloy chemistry, friction stir processing and tensile deformation. The study reveals that while intrinsic c/a is dependent on alloying elements, c/a of epsilon in transformative HEAs changes with processing and deformation.

Atomic layer deposition of h-BN(0001) multilayers on Ni(111) and chemical vapor deposition of graphene on h-BN(0001)/Ni(111)
Article studying atomic layer deposition. In situ direct, epitaxial growth of multilayers of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and graphene without physical transfer is of significant interest for the scalable production of graphene/h-BN heterostructures for device applications. Deposition on magnetic substrates is of particular interest for spin tunneling applications. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction demonstrate epitaxial atomic-layer deposition (ALD) of multilayer h-BN(0001) on Ni(111) and subsequent deposition of azimuthally-aligned multilayer graphene on h-BN(0001)/Ni(111) by chemical vapor deposition. Boron nitride ALD was accomplished with alternating cycles of BClโ/NHโ at a 600 K substrate temperature, and subsequent annealing in ultrahigh vacuum. Subsequent deposition of graphene was achieved by chemical vapor deposition using ethylene (CHโCHโ) at 1000 K.

Parental stressor exposure simultaneously conveys both adaptive and maladaptive larval phenotypes through epigenetic inheritance in the zebrafish (Danio rerio)
This article is a study using crude oil as an example of an environmental stressor in adult zebrafish. The offspring obtained were then assessed for transgenerational epigenetic transfer of oil-induced phenotypes. The authors conclude that epigenetic transgenerational inheritance can lead to an immediate and simultaneous inheritance of both beneficial and maladaptive traits in a large proportion of the F1 larvae. The adaptive responses may help fish populations survive when facing transient environmental stressors.

The Tourism Sector and U.S. Regional Macroeconomic Stability: A Network Approach
This article investigates how the structural mix of USA regional economies affects their volatility of economic growth using four exogenous sectors: Federal Government, construction, manufacturing, and tourism. Results suggest that a larger share of Federal Government employment in an economy reduces the variability of overall employment growth, while a larger share of construction activity elevates it. Results also show that recently manufacturing has not contributed as much to such variability, and that a larger tourism presence increases it. The increasing integration of technology in tourism offers significant opportunities for a network approach and innovation in regional development.

Long-range nonspreading propagation of sound beam through periodic layered structure
Article analyzing dispersion of sound in a solid-fluid layered structure and found a flex point on the isofrequency curve where D vanishes for given direction of propagation and frequency. Nonspreading propagation is experimentally observed in a water steel lattice of 75 periods (~1 meter long) and occurs in the regime of anomalous dispersion and strong acoustic anisotropy when the effective mass along periodicity is close to zero. Under these conditions the incoming beam experiences negative refraction of phase velocity leading to backward wave propagation. The observed effect is explained using a complete set of dynamical equations and our effective medium theory.

Modeling and predicting evacuation flows during hurricane Irma
This article proposes a method to model evacuation flows and reveal the patterns of evacuation flows at different spatial scales. First, the authors present a method to characterize evacuation flows at different geographic scales: the state level, considering evacuation flows across southern states affected by Irma; the urban/rural area level, and the county level. Then they demonstrate results on the predictability of evacuation flows in the most affected state, Florida, by using the following environmental factors: the destructive force of the hurricane, the socioeconomic context, and the evacuation policy issued for counties. The results presented in this paper can help decision makers to better understand population evacuation behaviors given certain environmental features, which in turn will aid in the design of efficient and informed preparedness and response strategies.
