DNA metabarcoding captures different macroinvertebrate biodiversity than morphological identification approaches across a continental scale (open access)

DNA metabarcoding captures different macroinvertebrate biodiversity than morphological identification approaches across a continental scale

Article describes how DNA-based aquatic biomonitoring methods show promise to provide rapid, standardized, and efficient biodiversity assessment to supplement and in some cases replace current morphology-based approaches that are often less efficient and can produce inconsistent results. The authors present a comparison of DNA metabarcoding and morphological identification, leveraging national-scale, open-source, ecological datasets from the National Ecological Observatory Network.

Does Perceived Competence Mediate between Ball Skills and Children’s Physical Activity and Enjoyment? (open access)

Does Perceived Competence Mediate between Ball Skills and Children’s Physical Activity and Enjoyment?

This article examines the potential mediating role of perceived motor skill competence on relationships between actual ball skills and children’s physical activity (PA) and PA enjoyment. Correlation analyses showed positive relationships among the study variables. The findings highlight that ball skills significantly impact students’ perceived competence, positively and indirectly affecting their PA and PA enjoyment.

Educational Psychology, Special Education, and Human Development and Family Science Academic Program Review (open access)

Educational Psychology, Special Education, and Human Development and Family Science Academic Program Review

This report summarizes an evaluation of the UNT Libraries' Educational Psychology, Special Education, and Human Development and Family Science-related resources and materials to determine if the collection is adequately serving patron needs. It was generated as part of the UNT Libraries’ contributions to the university’s Academic Program Reviews, which are conducted by the Accreditation office in the Division of Planning. The UNT Libraries’ Collection Assessment Department evaluated collections’ ability to meet the curricular and research needs of the academic programs being reviewed. They assessed current needs based on course descriptions and research outputs, defined the scope of information needed based on this needs assessment, and evaluated the Libraries’ holdings in these subject areas against the usage, qualitative listings, and requests for materials from other libraries. Specific recommendations for collection development are provided based on the results of these analyses.

Effect of a finite antiproton mass on antihydrogen synthesis via magnetobound positronium within electron-positron-antiproton plasmas (open access)

Effect of a finite antiproton mass on antihydrogen synthesis via magnetobound positronium within electron-positron-antiproton plasmas

This article describes a study that was conducted to determine what would happen if a magnetobound positronium system encountered a finite-mass antiproton. The simulation incorporates a strong magnetic field (1 T) similar to that found within Penning traps. The simulation shows that with a finite-mass antiproton, the electron will be ejected from the system, and the positron is captured into a bound state with an antiproton thereby synthesizing antihydrogen.

EMOTION-III Model: A Theoretical Framework for Social Empathic Emotions in Autonomous Control Systems (open access)

EMOTION-III Model: A Theoretical Framework for Social Empathic Emotions in Autonomous Control Systems

In this article, a theoretical model of social empathic emotion is derived based on the principles of survival by extending the maximization of self-gains to include others as an extended-self. This extended-self model of optimization for survival provides the computational mechanisms in the optimization process to maximize self-gains without minimizing the gains (or maximizing losses) for the other individuals. Thus, it can resolve conflicts in a competitive environment, and change the social dynamics into a cooperative interaction instead.
