Evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties in gas tungsten arc welded dual-phase Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 high entropy alloy

Article describes how in recent years, high entropy alloys (HEAs) have been shown to be promising alternatives to common engineering alloys, depending on their composition and thermomechanical processing. In the present work, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) was used to achieve defect-free joints based on a novel transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 HEA.

Thermal heat transfer and energy modeling through incorporation of phase change materials (PCMs) into polyurethane foam

Article describes how decreasing HVAC energy consumption through insulation effectiveness enables low energy use, low carbon emissions, and high thermal comfort in sustainable buildings. In this paper, two PCMs with transition temperature above and below the outdoor temperature incorporated in highly porous flexible polyurethane foam were evaluated using a one-dimensional (1D) foam core panel built in COMSOL Multiphysics®.

Histological features of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease revealed in response to mixed vehicle emission exposure and consumption of a high-fat diet in wildtype C57Bl/6 male mice (open access)

Histological features of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease revealed in response to mixed vehicle emission exposure and consumption of a high-fat diet in wildtype C57Bl/6 male mice

Article describes how non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently plaguing the population at pandemic proportions and is expected to become more prevalent over the next decade. The authors investigated the hypothesis that exposure to a mixture of gasoline and diesel engine emissions (MVE), coupled with the concurrent consumption of a HF diet, promotes the development of a NAFLD phenotype within the liver.

Underlying factors determining grain morphologies in high-strength titanium alloys processed by additive manufacturing

Article describes how, in recent research, additions of solute to Ti and some Ti-based alloys have been employed to produce equiaxed microstructures when processing these materials using additive manufacturing. The present study develops a computational scheme for guiding the selection of such alloying additions, and the minimum amounts required, to effect the columnar to equiaxed microstructural transitions.

Experimental and Modeling Study of Water Time Histories during H2S-N2O Combustion in a Shock Tube

Article describes how, in the present study, the water formation was followed by laser absorption with N2O as an oxidant, instead of O2. Three H2S/N2O mixtures diluted in 98% Ar were studied to cover the following range of equivalence ratios: 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0, over a wide range of temperatures (1580–1940 K) around atmospheric pressure.

Fractal structure of human and primate social networks optimizes information flow

Article describes how primate and human social groups exhibit a fractal structure that has a very limited range of preferred layer sizes. The authors calculate the size dependence of the scaling properties of complex social network models and argue that this aggregate behavior exhibits a form of collective intelligence.

Reactions of hydrazine with the amidogen radical and atomic hydrogen

Article describes how the rate coefficient k1 for NH2 + N2H4 was measured to be (5.4 ± 0.4) × 10−14 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 at 296 K. Holographic Fabrication of 3D Moiré Photonic Crystals Using Circularly Polarized Laser Beams and a Spatial Light Modulator

The authors of the article state that holographic fabrication of a 3D moiré photonic crystal is very difficult due to the coexistence of the bright and dark regions, where the exposure threshold is suitable for one region but not for the other. In this paper, the authors study the holographic fabrication of 3D moiré photonic crystals using an integrated system of a single reflective optical element (ROE) and a spatial light modulator (SLM) where nine beams (four inner beams + four outer beams + central beam) are overlapped.

Geometry, groceries, and gardens: Learning mathematics and social justice through a nested, equity-directed instructional approach (open access)

Geometry, groceries, and gardens: Learning mathematics and social justice through a nested, equity-directed instructional approach

Authors of the article addressed the call for explorations of how BIPOC students’ “experiences in secondary mathematics classrooms might advance transformative, equity-focused, pedagogical models” by exploring how a nested, equity-directed approach created different kinds of opportunities for students to take up, shift, or resist what it means to teach, learn, and do mathematics. Specifically, authors looked at efforts to engage equity-directed dominant and critical approaches through a series of three mathematics projects aimed at investigating food insecurity as a social (in)justice issue using geometry.

Comparison of Thermal Effectiveness and Crevice Corrosion Risk of Fin Geometry on All-Aluminum Microchannel Heat Exchangers

Article all-aluminum microchannel heat exchangers have recently gained popularity in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industry. Despite their attractive thermal performance design, these heat exchangers make coils used in automotive, commercial, and residential applications prone to crevice corrosion. This study uses high-fidelity conjugate heat transfer simulations to model a micro channel heat exchanger system that includes fins and tubes with crossflow to compare their thermal effectiveness to gain insight into potential crevice corrosion of the MCHE alloy.

Gemini Near Infrared Spectrograph–Distant Quasar Survey: Augmented Spectroscopic Catalog and a Prescription for Correcting UV-based Quasar Redshifts

Article describes how quasars at z ≳ 1 most often have redshifts measured from rest-frame ultraviolet emission lines. One of the most common such lines, C ivλ1549, shows blueshifts up to ≈5000 km s−1 and in rare cases even higher. The authors present spectroscopic measurements for 260 sources at 1.55 ≲ z ≲ 3.50 having −28.0 ≲ Mi ≲ − 30.0 mag from the Gemini Near Infrared Spectrograph–Distant Quasar Survey (GNIRS-DQS) catalog, augmenting the previous iteration, which contained 226 of the 260 sources whose measurements are improved upon in this work.

Gemini Near Infrared Spectrograph–Distant Quasar Survey: Prescriptions for Calibrating UV-based Estimates of Supermassive Black Hole Masses in High-redshift Quasars

Article describes how the most reliable single-epoch supermassive black hole mass (MBH) estimates in quasars are obtained by using the velocity widths of low-ionization emission lines, typically the Hβλ4861 line. The authors find that utilizing both emission lines, where available, reduces the scatter of UV-based MBH estimates by ∼15% when compared to previous studies.

Language Archiving Training: A Case Study of a Metadata Course in Library and Information Science Graduate Program, 2020 - 2023

Article explores the training gap between the way these materials are organized and represented and the understanding of that data – and expectations towards the more functional ways of its organization and representation – by language preservation and revitalization researchers, and by members of language communities. Information resources collected by language archives have unique attributes of importance to their target user groups, and these attributes and their representation are not currently widely addressed by the formal training provided to information professionals. It was presented at the 2nd International Workshop on Digital Language Archives held on June 30, 2023 as part of the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2023.<

Metabolic and transcriptomic study of pennycress natural variation identifies targets for oil improvement

Article describes how, although pennycress, a winter annual, could be grown as a dedicated bioenergy crop, an increase in its seed oil content is required to improve its economic competitiveness. In this work, the authors combined biomass composition with metabolomic and transcriptomic studies of developing embryos from 22 pennycress natural variants to identify targets for oil improvement.

Guanidinium-based covalent organic framework membrane for single-acid recovery

Article discusses how, although acids are extensively used in contemporary industries, time-consuming and environmentally unfriendly processes hinder single-acid recovery from wastes containing various iconic species. The authors rationally designed a membrane with uniform angstrom-sized pore channels and built-in charge-assisted hydrogen bond donors that preferentially conducted HCl while exhibiting negligible conductance for other compounds.
