Anti-racist Praxis at Futurist Art and Design Pedagogy captions transcript

Anti-racist Praxis at Futurist Art and Design Pedagogy

Video recording featuring esteemed guest panelists, Tameka Ellington, Ph.D., Cheryl D. Holmes Miller, and Terresa Moses, M.F.A., this second installment of the 2044 series highlights the ways that working against anti-Blackness through the lens of Afrofuturism and Critical Race Theory allows for the examination and enactment of decolonizing design bias and white default. This session brings questions of Black agency, stereotyping, bias, representation, appropriation, commodification, and the dangers of pathologizing Blackness in design. Panelists discuss anti-racist practice in design education through forms of resistance and resilience.

POSMM: an efficient alignment-free metagenomic profiler that complements alignment-based profiling (open access)

POSMM: an efficient alignment-free metagenomic profiler that complements alignment-based profiling

Article presents POSMM, Python-Optimized Standard Markov Model classifier, which is a new incarnation of the Markov model approach to metagenomic sequence analysis. The authors claim that by combining POSMM with ultrafast classifiers such as Kraken2, their complementary strengths can be leveraged to produce higher overall accuracy in metagenomic sequence classification than by either as a standalone classifier. POSMM is a user-friendly and highly adaptable tool designed for broad use by the metagenome scientific community.

Replicate DNA metabarcoding can discriminate seasonal and spatial abundance shifts in river macroinvertebrate assemblages (open access)

Replicate DNA metabarcoding can discriminate seasonal and spatial abundance shifts in river macroinvertebrate assemblages

Article asserts that the delivery of consistent and accurate fine-resolution data on biodiversity using metabarcoding promises to improve environmental assessment and research. The authors propose a novel hierarchical approach to recovering abundance information from metabarcoding, and demonstrate this technique using benthic macroinvertebrates.

A modified aeroponic system for growing small-seeded legumes and other plants to study root systems

Authors of the article state that various growth systems are available for studying plant root growth and plant–microbe interactions including hydroponics and aeroponics. The aim of their study is to present step-by-step instructions for fabricating an aeroponic system, also called a “caisson,” that has been in use in several legume research labs studying the development of symbiotic nitrogen fixing nodules, but for which detailed directions are not currently available.

Gene-based association tests using GWAS summary statistics and incorporating eQTL (open access)

Gene-based association tests using GWAS summary statistics and incorporating eQTL

Article proposes a powerful and computationally efficient gene-based association test, called Overall. Using extended Simes procedure, Overall aggregates information from three types of traditional gene-based association tests and also incorporates expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) information into a gene-based association test using GWAS summary statistics. The results show that this newly developed method can identify more significant genes than other methods.

My Texas History Notebook: Interactive Lesson Plans for 4th and 7th Graders Grant Materials (open access)

My Texas History Notebook: Interactive Lesson Plans for 4th and 7th Graders Grant Materials

These grant materials were prepared for a project funded by Humanities Texas to develop and present online lesson plans that incorporate the interactive notebook style of learning. This method of teaching combines three pivotal concepts in educational research: spiral curriculum theory, multiple intelligences, and cooperative interaction. This problem-based learning system incorporates preview assignments, multiple intelligences teaching strategies, graphically organized notes, and processing assignments that require students to demonstrate their knowledge. The documents explore the research and methodology behind this style of pedagogy, and the elements of an interactive notebook. A work plan details how the project would work with master teachers to develop this curriculum. The project was funded for $5,000.
