Understanding Melanocyte Stem Cells for Disease Modeling and Regenerative Medicine Applications

This review highlights recent studies and progress involved in understanding the development of cutaneous melanocytes and the regulation of McSCs. Melanocytes in the skin play an indispensable role in the pigmentation of skin and its appendages. It is well known that the embryonic origin of melanocytes is neural crest cells. In adult skin, functional melanocytes are continuously repopulated by the differentiation of melanocyte stem cells (McSCs) residing in the epidermis of the skin.

Salvianolic Acid B (Sal B) Protects Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells from Oxidative Stress-Induced Cell Death by Activating Glutaredoxin 1 (Grx1) (open access)

Salvianolic Acid B (Sal B) Protects Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells from Oxidative Stress-Induced Cell Death by Activating Glutaredoxin 1 (Grx1)

The article explores Salvianolic acid B (Sal B), a natural compound, as a Grx1 inducer, which potently protected retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells from oxidative injury. Their results showed that treatment with Sal B protected primary human RPE cells from H₂O₂-induced cell damage. They found Sal B pretreatment upregulated Grx1 expression in RPE cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

Humanin Attenuates NMDA-Induced Excitotoxicity by Inhibiting ROS-dependent JNK/p38 MAPK Pathway (open access)

Humanin Attenuates NMDA-Induced Excitotoxicity by Inhibiting ROS-dependent JNK/p38 MAPK Pathway

This article highlights a study aimed to investigate neuroprotective mechanisms of HN. We analyzed intracellular Ca²+ levels, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and the MAPKs signal transduction cascade using an in vitro NMDA-mediated excitotoxicity of cortical neurons model.

Cataract Preventive Role of Isolated Phytoconstituents: Findings from a Decade of Research (open access)

Cataract Preventive Role of Isolated Phytoconstituents: Findings from a Decade of Research

This review aims to find effective phytoconstituents in cataract treatments in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo. Scientists have focused their attention not only for anti-cataract activity in vitro, but also in ex vivo and in vivo from the review of active phytoconstituents in medicinal plants. In our present review, we identified 58 active phytoconstituents with strong anti-cataract effects at in vitro and ex vivo with lack of in vivo studies.

Chronic Inhibition of Mitochondrial Dihydrolipoamide Dehydrogenase (DLDH) as an Approach to Managing Diabetic Oxidative Stress (open access)

Chronic Inhibition of Mitochondrial Dihydrolipoamide Dehydrogenase (DLDH) as an Approach to Managing Diabetic Oxidative Stress

This article investigates if chronic inhibition of DLDH could also attenuate oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes. It is the authors' belief that DLDH inhibition could be a novel approach to fighting type 2 diabetes.
