A Novel Prodrug Approach for Central Nervous System-Selective Estrogen Therapy
This article gives an overview of the discovery of small-molecule bioprecursor prodrugs carrying the para-quinol scaffold on the steroidal A-ring that are preferentially metabolized in the CNS to the corresponding estrogens. Selected examples are shown to illustrate that, independently of the route of administrations and duration of treatments, these agents produce high concentration of estrogens only in the CNS without peripheral hormonal liability. 10β,17β-Dihydroxyestra-1,4-dien-3-one (DHED) has been the best-studied representative of this novel type of prodrugs for brain and retina health. Specific applications in preclinical animal models of centrally-regulated and estrogen-responsive human diseases, including neurodegeneration, menopausal symptoms, cognitive decline and depression, are discussed to demonstrate the translational potential of their prodrug approach for CNS-selective and gender-independent estrogen therapy with inherent therapeutic safety.

Evaluation of Uniformity of Bamboo Bundle Veneer and Bamboo Bundle Laminated Veneer Lumber (BLVL)
In this article the density uniformity and mechanical properties of bamboo bundle veneers were systematically evaluated by the combination of light transmittance and mechanical stiffness. It was found that the number of broomings, dippings, and high-temperature heat treatments had different effects on the bamboo bundle veneers. On this basis, the uniformity of the density and mechanical properties of the bamboo scrimber (BS) that underwent hybrid paving, and the bamboo bundle laminated veneer lumber (BLVL), were analyzed.

Persistent spin helix in Rashba-Dresselhaus ferroelectric CsBiNb2O7
Article reporting that CsBiNb₂O₇, a layered perovskite of Dion-Jacobson type, is a robust ferroelectric with sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling and spin texture reversible by electric field. The study reveals that its topmost valence band's spin texture is quasi-independent from the momentum, as a result of the low symmetry of its ferroelectric phase. The peculiar spin-polarization pattern in the momentum space may yield the so-called “persistent spin helix,” a specific spin-wave mode which protects the spin from decoherence in the diffusive transport regime, potentially ensuring a very long spin lifetime in this material.
