A New Cable-Less Seismograph with Functions of Real-Time Data Transmitting and High-Precision Differential Self-Positioning

This article developed a new cable-less seismograph system, which can transmit seismic data in real-time and automatically perform high-precision differential self-positioning. Combining the ZigBee technology with the high-precision differential positioning module, this new seismograph system utilized the wireless personal area network (WPAN) and real-time kinematic (RTK) technologies to improve its on-site performances and to make the field quality control (QC) and self-positioning possible. With the advantages of low-cost, good scalability, and good compatibility, the proposed new cable-less seismograph system can improve the field working efficiency and data processing capability. It has potential applications in noise seismology and mobile seismic monitoring.

Mapping the Inner Monstress

This presentation was delivered as part of a literary conference on "Monstrosity and the Topography of Fear" sponsored by the Society for Comparative Literature and the Arts. It argues that the Alex Garland film Annihilation (2018) and the Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda comic series Monstress (2015) both enact post-human dramas of colonization by the Other, figured as both alien and natural forces, but leave room for the possibility of "hybrid bodies" that allow for integration of the human and the non-human, and a mutual agency that might be productive of new ways of existing and acting in harmony.

Using representational and abstract imagery to createregulatory fit effects (open access)

Using representational and abstract imagery to createregulatory fit effects

Article asserts that visual imagery is one of the most important methods of communicating with consumers, but scholars have generally neglected the role of different forms of visual imagery (representational and abstract). The authors demonstrate that prevention-focused versus promotion-focused mindsets guide the interpretation of meanings conveyed by representational versus abstract visual imagery as a nonverbal means to achieve regulatory fit.

Electrostatic storage ring with focusing provided by the space charge of an electron plasma (open access)

Electrostatic storage ring with focusing provided by the space charge of an electron plasma

Article describes an electronic storage ring that employs the space charge of an electron plasma for focusing. An advantage of the present concept is that slow ions, or even a stationary ion plasma, can be confined. The concept employs an artificially structured boundary, which is defined at present as one that produces a spatially periodic static field such that the spatial period and range of the field are much smaller than the dimensions of a plasma or charged-particle beam that is confined by the field.
