Long-range current-induced spin accumulation in chiral crystals (open access)

Long-range current-induced spin accumulation in chiral crystals

Article states that chiral materials, similarly to human hands, have distinguishable right-handed and left-handed enantiomers which may behave differently in response to external stimuli, so for the first time the authors use an approach based on the density functional theory (DFT)+PAOFLOW calculations to quantitatively estimate the so-called collinear Rashba–Edelstein effect (REE) that generates spin accumulation parallel to charge current and can manifest as chirality-dependent charge-to-spin conversion in chiral crystals. The authors reveal that the spin accumulation induced in the bulk by an electric current is intrinsically protected by the quasi-persistent spin helix arising from the crystal symmetries present in chiral systems with the Weyl spin–orbit coupling.

High-Temperature Nano-Indentation Creep of Reduced Activity High Entropy Alloys Based on 4-5-6 Elemental Palette (open access)

High-Temperature Nano-Indentation Creep of Reduced Activity High Entropy Alloys Based on 4-5-6 Elemental Palette

In this article the time-dependent plastic deformation behavior of two refractory high entropy alloys was investigated, namely HfTaTiVZr and TaTiVWZr. These alloys are based on reduced activity metals from the 4-5-6 elemental palette that would allow easy post-service recycling after use in nuclear reactors. The creep behavior was investigated using nano-indentation over the temperature range of 298 K to 573 K under static and dynamic loads up to 5 N.

The exact consistency strength of the generic absoluteness for the universally Baire sets

Article describes how a set of reals is universally Baire if all of its continuous preimages in topological spaces have the Baire property. The authors show that over some mild large cardinal theory, sealing is equiconsistent with LSA-over-uB.

Finding new friends and revisiting old ones – how plant lipid droplets connect with other subcellular structures

Article talks about how the number of described contact sites between different subcellular compartments and structures in eukaryotic cells has increased dramatically in recent years, which has substantially reinforced the well-known premise that these kinds of connections are essential for overall cellular organization. The authors discuss contact sites involving plant lipid droplets (LDs), including LD-endoplasmic reticulum (ER) connections that mediate the biogenesis of new LDs at the ER, LD-peroxisome connections.

Thymoquinone overcomes chemoresistance and enhances the anticancer effects of bortezomib through abrogation of NF-κB regulated gene products in multiple myeloma xenograft mouse model

Article investigates whether thymoquinone (TQ), a bioactive constituent of black seed oil, could suppress the proliferation and induce chemosensitization in human myeloma cells and xenograft mouse model. Overall, the results demonstrate that TQ can enhance the anticancer activity of bortezomib in vitro and in vivo and may have a substantial potential in the treatment of MM.

Autoencoder Composite Scoring to Evaluate Prosthetic Performance in Individuals with Lower Limb Amputation

Authors of the article created an overall assessment metric using a deep learning autoencoder to directly compare clinical outcomes in a comparison of lower limb amputees using two different prosthetic devices—a mechanical knee and a microprocessor-controlled knee. The proposed methods were used on data collected from ten participants with a dysvascular transfemoral amputation recruited for a prosthetics research study.
