Evaluation of intermetallic compound layer at aluminum/steel interface joined by friction stir scribe technology (open access)

Evaluation of intermetallic compound layer at aluminum/steel interface joined by friction stir scribe technology

Article describes the results of friction stir welding of aluminum and steel, in which heat input and high strain rate deformation during resulted in the diffusion-based formation of a FexAly intermetallic compound (IMC) layer.

Nature-Guided Synthesis of Advanced Bio-Lubricants (open access)

Nature-Guided Synthesis of Advanced Bio-Lubricants

Article describes study which finds that Orychophragmus violaceus (Ov) seed oil has superior lubrication properties, based on the unusual structural features of the major lipid species—triacylglycerol (TAG) estolides.

On the evolving nature of c/a ratio in a hexagonal close-packed epsilon martensite phase in transformative high entropy alloys (open access)

On the evolving nature of c/a ratio in a hexagonal close-packed epsilon martensite phase in transformative high entropy alloys

Article studying c/a ratio and transformation volume change of h.c.p. (hexagonal close packed) epsilon martensite phase in transformative high entropy alloys (HEAs) quantified as functions of alloy chemistry, friction stir processing and tensile deformation. The study reveals that while intrinsic c/a is dependent on alloying elements, c/a of epsilon in transformative HEAs changes with processing and deformation.

On the evolving nature of c/a ratio in a hexagonal close-packed epsilon martensite phase in transformative high entropy alloys

Article describes a study in which c/a ratio and transformation volume change of h.c.p. epsilon martensite phase in transformative high entropy alloys (HEAs) were quantified as functions of alloy chemistry, friction stir processing and tensile deformation.

Revisiting surface core-level shifts for ionic compounds (open access)

Revisiting surface core-level shifts for ionic compounds

Article establishing a theoretical method which is able to relate the binding energy shifts to the electronic structure of a material. In order to establish such a methodology, the CaO(100) surface to bulk core-level binding energy shifts are studied with Hartree-Fock and density-functional theory methods using both cluster and periodic slab models.

Biodiversity of protists and nematodes in the wild nonhuman primate gut (open access)

Biodiversity of protists and nematodes in the wild nonhuman primate gut

Article describes study which used an 18S rRNA gene fragment metabarcoding approach to assess the eukaryotic assemblage of 62 individuals representing 16 nonhuman primate NHP species to better understand the factors that influence the assembly and diversity of gut-associated eukaryotes.

Towards Deep Integration of Electronics and Photonics (open access)

Towards Deep Integration of Electronics and Photonics

This is a review of applications of polariton modes related to the design and fabrication of electro-optical circuits. The emphasis is made on surface plasmon-polaritons which have already demonstrated their value in many fields of technology. Other possible quasiparticles as well as their hybridization with plasmons are discussed.
