Evaluation of a Chicken 600K SNP genotyping array in non-model species of grouse (open access)

Evaluation of a Chicken 600K SNP genotyping array in non-model species of grouse

This article tested the cross-species application of the Affymetrix 600K Chicken SNP array in five species of North American prairie grouse (Centrocercus and Tympanuchus genera). Two individuals were genotyped per species for a total of ten samples and a high proportion (91%) of the total 580 961 SNPs were genotyped in at least one individual (73–76% SNPs genotyped per species).

Perception of Falls and Confidence in Self-Management of Falls among Older Adults (open access)

Perception of Falls and Confidence in Self-Management of Falls among Older Adults

This article investigates the relative contribution of confidence of self-management in falls (CSMoF) in relation to fall risk self-perceptions while controlling for demographics and self-reported health and functioning. The joint effects of perception of falls and fear of falls likely explain CSMoF among older adults more than physical functional indicators. Fall prevention programs for older adults should prioritize to address modifiable subjective factors of fall perceptions, fear of falls, and CSMoF across health and functioning statuses.

“Youth Are More Aware and Intelligent than Imagined”: The Mountain Air Youth Photovoice Project (open access)

“Youth Are More Aware and Intelligent than Imagined”: The Mountain Air Youth Photovoice Project

This article looks at respiratory illness in Appalachian Kentucky because it reports some of the highest rates of respiratory illness in the United States. As part of the Mountain Air Project, local youth were invited to share their perspectives on possible contributing factors to respiratory illness, and the authors undertook an exploratory study to determine the utility of photovoice to elicit such perspectives with this population. This study demonstrates the value of incorporating youth perspectives in environmental health research, and that photovoice was a valuable approach to elicit such perspectives.

Hypoxic level and duration differentially affect embryonic organ system development of the chicken (Gallus gallus) (open access)

Hypoxic level and duration differentially affect embryonic organ system development of the chicken (Gallus gallus)

This article investigates how key organ systems are affected by hypoxia. The results indicated that either modest hypoxia (15% O2) throughout development, or hypoxia at any level during the late stages (d 11 to 18), increased the heart and chorioallantoic membrane weight, which partly compensated for the detrimental effects of hypoxia on embryonic development.
