Computational modeling of human reasoning processes for interpretable visual knowledge: a case study with radiographers (open access)

Computational modeling of human reasoning processes for interpretable visual knowledge: a case study with radiographers

Article proposing a computational method to quantify and dissect visual reasoning. The method characterizes spatial and temporal features and identifies common and contrast visual reasoning patterns to extract significant gaze activities. The visual reasoning patterns are explainable and can be compared among different groups to discover strategy differences. Empirical observations show that the method can capture the temporal and spatial features of human visual attention and distinguish expertise level. By revealing task-related reasoning processes, this method demonstrates potential for explaining human visual understanding.

FERONIA and wall-associated kinases coordinate defense induced by lignin modification in plant cell walls (open access)

FERONIA and wall-associated kinases coordinate defense induced by lignin modification in plant cell walls

Article discusses authors' findings that through genetic screening for suppressors of defense gene induction in the low lignin ccr1-3 mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana, we found that loss of function of the receptor-like kinase FERONIA, although not restoring growth, affected cell wall remodeling and blocked release of elicitor-active pectic polysaccharides as a result of the ccr1-3 mutation. They determine that engineering plant cell walls will require development of ways to bypass endogenous pectin signaling pathways.

Functional Carbon Capsules Supporting Ruthenium Nanoclusters for Efficient Electrocatalytic 99TcO4-/ReO4 Removal from Acidic and Alkaline Nuclear Wastes

Article describes how the selective removal of the β-emitting pertechnetate ion (99TcO4−) from nuclear waste streams is technically challenging. In this article, a practical approach is proposed for the selective removal of 99TcO4− (or its surrogate ReO4−) under extreme conditions of high acidity, alkalinity, ionic strength, and radiation field.

Evidence of Endozoochory in Upland Geese Chloephaga picta and White-Bellied Seedsnipes Attagis malouinus in Sub-Antarctic Chile

This article evaluates the role of endozoochory in herbivorous and sympatric bird species in sub-Antarctic Chile. The authors hypothesize that fragments of bryophyte gametophytes retrieved from their feces are viable and capable of regenerating new plant tissue. This relationship may have important implications in the way bryophytes disperse and colonize habitats facing climate change.

Effects of Low-Intensity Aerobic Exercise on Neurophysiological and Behavioral Correlates of Cognitive Function (open access)

Effects of Low-Intensity Aerobic Exercise on Neurophysiological and Behavioral Correlates of Cognitive Function

Article asserts that acute aerobic exercise exerts a small beneficial effect on cognition. Previous research primarily examines cognitive changes following a bout of exercise, while little is currently known about changes in cognitive performance during exercise. Authors state that the primary purpose of this study was to examine the effects of low-intensity cycling on cognitive function indexed by behavioral (response accuracy; reaction time) and neurocognitive (P3 mean amplitude; P3 centroid latency) responses.

Energy Conversion During Expansion of a Solid-Particle-Entrained Gas (open access)

Energy Conversion During Expansion of a Solid-Particle-Entrained Gas

This article describes pneumatic energy being converted into solid particle kinetic energy as a solid-particle-entrained gas that flows downward through a vertical nozzle. For the conditions studied, the solid particles serve as a heat exchange medium to enable a gas expansion that is nearly isothermal. Also, the kinetic energy associated with the two-phase fluid is predominantly that associated with subsonic solid-particle motion. The kinetic energy of the solid particles is converted into other forms using a low-speed turbine. A theoretical description of the process is presented, and the initiation of an experimental effort to study the process is described.
