Diverse values of nature for sustainability (open access)

Diverse values of nature for sustainability

Article describes how, twenty-five years since foundational publications on valuing ecosystems services for human well-being, addressing the global biodiversity crisis still implied confronting barriers to incorporating nature's diverse values into decision-making. The authors assert that a better understanding of how and why nature is (under)valued is more urgent than ever.

Holographic Fabrication of 3D Moiré Photonic Crystals Using Circularly Polarized Laser Beams and a Spatial Light Modulator (open access)

Holographic Fabrication of 3D Moiré Photonic Crystals Using Circularly Polarized Laser Beams and a Spatial Light Modulator

The authors of the article state that holographic fabrication of a 3D moiré photonic crystal is very difficult due to the coexistence of the bright and dark regions, where the exposure threshold is suitable for one region but not for the other. In this paper, the authors study the holographic fabrication of 3D moiré photonic crystals using an integrated system of a single reflective optical element (ROE) and a spatial light modulator (SLM) where nine beams (four inner beams + four outer beams + central beam) are overlapped.

Combined influence of soil moisture and atmospheric humidity on land surface temperature under different climatic background (open access)

Combined influence of soil moisture and atmospheric humidity on land surface temperature under different climatic background

Article describes how soil moisture (SM) and atmospheric humidity (AH) are crucial climatic variables that significantly affect the climate system. However, the combined influencing mechanisms of SM and AH on the land surface temperature (LST) under global warming are still unclear. The authors systematically analyzed the interrelationships among annual mean values of SM, AH, and LST using ERA5-Land reanalysis data and revealed the role of SM and AH on the spatiotemporal variations of LST through mechanism analysis and regression methods.

Effects of cultivar and nitrogen application rate on lint, seed, oil, and protein yields of field-grown cotton (open access)

Effects of cultivar and nitrogen application rate on lint, seed, oil, and protein yields of field-grown cotton

Article describes how the objective of this study was to evaluate the lint, seed, oil, and protein yield responses of cultivars with different seed mass and composition to N application rates (0–168 kg N ha−1) for field-grown cotton. The authors conclude that variability in the distribution of photosynthates to fiber and seed as well as seed oil and protein composition can significantly alter trends in fiber, seed, and seed component yields in response to cultivar or N application rates for field-grown cotton.

Seeing plants as never before (open access)

Seeing plants as never before

Authors of the article assert that imaging has long supported our ability to understand the inner life of plants, their development, and response to a dynamic environment. The purpose of this review was to provide the scientific community with an overview of current imaging methods, which rely variously on either nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS) or infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and to present some examples of their application in order to illustrate their utility.

Preparation of a strong, high prepressing intensity, and multifunction soybean protein adhesive by using hyperbranched functional polymer

Article states that the preparation of a soybean protein adhesive with good prepressing intensity, mildew proof, flame retardant, and high bond strength are conducive to the wide application of a soybean protein adhesive, which is important but challenging for the wood-based panel industry. In this study, two hyperbranched functional polymers were designed.

The Crucial Role of Solvation Forces in the Steric Stabilization of Nanoplatelets (open access)

The Crucial Role of Solvation Forces in the Steric Stabilization of Nanoplatelets

Article says that the steric stability of inorganic colloidal particles in an apolar solvent is usually described in terms of the balance between three contributions: the van der Waals attraction, the free energy of mixing, and the ligand compression. The authors demonstrate that for sufficiently large nanoplatelets, solvation forces are proportional to the interacting facet area, and their strength is intrinsically tied to the softness of the ligand shell.

Inhaled diesel exhaust particles result in microbiome‑related systemic inflammation and altered cardiovascular disease biomarkers in C57Bl/6 male mice

Article discusses the authors' investigation the hypothesis that exposure to inhaled diesel exhaust particles alters the gut microbiome and promotes microbial-related inflammation and cardiovascular disease biomarkers. To determine whether probiotics could prevent diet or DEP exposure mediated alterations in the gut microbiome or systemic outcomes, a subset of animals on the HF diet were treated orally with 0.3 g/day (~ 7.5 × 108 CFU/day) of Winclove Ecologic® Barrier probiotics throughout the study.
