Evaluation of pathways to the C-glycosyl isoflavone puerarin in roots of kudzu (Pueraria montana lobata) (open access)

Evaluation of pathways to the C-glycosyl isoflavone puerarin in roots of kudzu (Pueraria montana lobata)

Article describes how kudzu produces both O- and C-glycosylated isoflavones, with puerarin (C-glucosyl daidzein) as an important bioactive compound. The authors go on to explain how expression of recombinant UGTs in Escherichia coli and candidate C-glycosyltransferases in Medicago truncatula were used to explore substrate specificities, and gene silencing of UGT and key isoflavone biosynthetic genes in kudzu hairy roots employed to test hypotheses concerning the substrate(s) for C-glycosylation.

Analysis of the Fe 2p XPS for hematite 𝛂 Fe2O3: Consequences of covalent bonding and orbital splittings on multiplet splittings (open access)

Analysis of the Fe 2p XPS for hematite 𝛂 Fe2O3: Consequences of covalent bonding and orbital splittings on multiplet splittings

Article analyzes the origins of the complex Fe 2p X-Ray Photoelectron Spectra (XPS) of hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) and is related to the character of the bonding in this compound. This analysis provides a new and novel view of the reasons for XPS binding energies (BEs) and BE shifts, which deepens the current understanding and interpretation of the physical and chemical significance of the XPS. This article is part of the JCP Special Topic on Oxide Chemistry and Catalysis.

Automatic trend detection: Time-biased document clustering (open access)

Automatic trend detection: Time-biased document clustering

This article presents a novel approach of introducing a weighted temporal feature to bias a topic clustering toward articles in a similar time frame, performed over a set of finance journal abstracts from 1974 to 2020 to demonstrate how time can be emphasized in trend detection. The authors detect trending finance topics that are not identifiable when we use a standard clustering approach with no temporal bias.
