UV and infrared absorption spectra and 248 nm photolysis of maleic anhydride (C₄H₂O₃) (open access)

UV and infrared absorption spectra and 248 nm photolysis of maleic anhydride (C₄H₂O₃)

This article investigates maleic anhydride (C₂H₂(CO)₂O, Furan-2,5-dione) that is emitted into or formed in the atmosphere during bio-mass burning events as well as being a photochemical degradation product of some aromatic volatile organic compounds. The photochemical fate of maleic anhydride, however, is presently not well enough characterized to enable modeling of its impact on the environment and human health. In this study, the room temperature UV and infrared absorption spectra of maleic anhydride were measured and quantified using several complementary calibration methods.

The Impact of the 2002 Delaware Smoking Ordinance on Heart Attack and Asthma (open access)

The Impact of the 2002 Delaware Smoking Ordinance on Heart Attack and Asthma

This article analyzes the Delaware Hospital Discharge Database, and identified state and non-state residents discharged with AMI or asthma for the years 1999 to 2004. Statistical data analysis compared the incidence of AMI or asthma for each group before (1999–2002) and after (2003–2004) the amendment. As a result, the authors found that pre-ordinance and post-ordinance quarterly rates of AMI for Delaware residents were 451 (se = 21) and 430 (se = 21) respectively, representing a 4.7% reduction.

Aquiline Books at UNT: A Progress Report (open access)

Aquiline Books at UNT: A Progress Report

Presentation for the 2017 Texas Conference on Institutional Repositories. In June 2015, the UNT Libraries launched a for-fee service for publishing works of scholarship from authors affiliated with the university. While authors can choose from a menu of editing and design options, all publications are made free to read online through the institutional repository. In this presentation, we reflect on our choices in designing the publishing service—such as not organizing peer review, delivering publications through the repository, requiring free public access but not Creative Commons licenses—and on what authors have chosen from the menu of options over the past two years.
