Scaling Students' Self-Efficacy on Machine Translation Post-Editing: Psychometric Properties of the Scale and Their Associations

Article describes how Machine Translation Post-Editing has emerged as a productivity-enhancing practice in the language service industry, where human editors correct the output of machine translation systems. this research paper aims to assess students' self-efficacy in translation learning, specifically in the context of MTPE, and explore the factor structure, psychometric properties, and internal associations of their self-efficacy.

Uncoupling system and environment simulation cells for fast-scaling modeling of complex continuum embeddings (open access)

Uncoupling system and environment simulation cells for fast-scaling modeling of complex continuum embeddings

Article describes how continuum solvation models are becoming increasingly relevant in condensed matter simulations, allowing to characterize materials interfaces in the presence of wet electrified environments at a reduced computational cost with respect to all atomistic simulations. However, some challenges with the implementation of these models in plane-wave simulation packages still persists, and to address these challenges, the authors present the implementation of a double-cell formalism, in which the simulation cell used for the continuum environment is uncoupled from the one used for the electronic-structure simulation of the quantum-mechanical system.

Genetic Differentiation of the South Florida Red-Shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus extimus) from the Nominate Subspecies (Buteo lineatus lineatus) (open access)

Genetic Differentiation of the South Florida Red-Shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus extimus) from the Nominate Subspecies (Buteo lineatus lineatus)

Article discusses how the south Florida subspecies of the Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus extimus) is distinctly paler and smaller than other subspecies, reproduces at a lower rate, and can occupy very different habitats such as open marshes and grasslands with only scattered trees. The authors evaluated population differentiation between the south Florida population of Red-shouldered Hawks and two populations of eastern Red-shouldered Hawks (B. l. lineatus) in suburban (Cincinnati) and rural (Hocking Hills) environments in southern Ohio.

Transgenic manipulation of triacylglycerol biosynthetic enzymes in B. napus alters lipid-associated gene expression and lipid metabolism

Article asserts that oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is an important crop that is cultivated for the oil (mainly triacylglycerol; TAG) it produces in its seeds. The author's results show that up-regulation of these key enzymes differentially affects lipid composition and distribution as well as lipid-associated gene expression, providing important information which could be used to improve crop properties by metabolic engineering.

Visual Narratives: Anti-racist Pedagogy in Art and Design

Video recording featuring guest panelists, Bridget R. Cooks, Ph.D., Omari Souza, and Wesley Taylor, this fourth installment of the 2044 series frames Afrofuturism and futurist thinking as a means for exploring the practices of design and museum curation as well as implications for art/design pedagogy. The panelists explore and discuss how hegemony is perpetuated, sharing the ways in which they decolonize within their curricula and pedagogy, as well as practice anti-racism in their work to reimagine risk or resist classification. While design institutions perpetuate neoliberalist ideals and language and teach under the paradigm of design for consumption, art/design education has the capacity to make a great impact by embracing the power of art and design to imagine alternative futures. The speakers also discuss important issues of cultural ethics, including copyright and appropriation, protections, and speaking up for community.

Who Is Purged? Determinants of Elite Purges in North Korea (open access)

Who Is Purged? Determinants of Elite Purges in North Korea

This article argues that elite purges in consolidated dictatorships have a different purpose and logic. Dictators, who have consolidated their position, seek to maximize the efficiency of rule by making the elite obedient through purges. For this purpose, dictators carefully select the purge target by considering various factors. To test this theory, the article examines the pattern of elite purges in North Korea based on an original individual-level dataset, which contains the personal background of 367 North Korean elites and their purge records between 1948 and 2019. Findings suggest that coup-proofing is not the only purpose of elite purges but that ensuring the leader’s political superiority is another purpose of elite purges in consolidated dictatorships.
