The accessory role of the diaphragmaticus muscle in lung ventilation in the estuarine crocodile Crocodylus porosus (open access)

The accessory role of the diaphragmaticus muscle in lung ventilation in the estuarine crocodile Crocodylus porosus

This article explores lung ventilation in crocodilians through direct measurements of ventilation, metabolic rate, and arterial blood gases of juvenile estuarine crocodiles in varying conditions. The results suggest that, in C. porosus, costal ventilation alone is able to support metabolic demands at rest, and the diaphragmaticus is largely an accessory muscle used at times of elevated metabolic demand.

Cluster embedding of ionic systems: Point charges and extended ions (open access)

Cluster embedding of ionic systems: Point charges and extended ions

This article presents a detailed analysis of the orbital energies of a representative cluster model of a high spin metal oxide, FeO, that has been made to determine the importance of different embedding schemes to represent the extended oxide crystal. The embedding of cluster models of oxides with point charges and with extensions of the embedding which take into account the spatial extent of the cations is examined with an emphasis on the consequences of this embedding for the relative ionization and excitation energies that are measured in core-level spectroscopies.

Effect of acute and chronic hypoxia on the swimming performance, metabolic capacity and cardiac function of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) (open access)

Effect of acute and chronic hypoxia on the swimming performance, metabolic capacity and cardiac function of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)

Article exploring the degree to which diminished cardiac function contributes to the reduction in fish swimming performance concomitant with acute exposure to hypoxia and how fish cardiorespiratory physiology is altered by, or adapts to, chronic hypoxia. Results provide important insights into how fish cardiorespiratory physiology is impacted by short-term and prolonged exposure to hypoxia, and highlight the capacity of the fish cardiorespiratory system to deal with environmental challenges.

Failure analysis of an elbow tube fitting (open access)

Failure analysis of an elbow tube fitting

This article discusses elbow tube fitting. Abstract: Safe operation of machinery depends strongly on the design of the system and the employement of proper components and materials. Unique to fluid powered systems are the proper selection of hydraulic lines, fittings, and control valves. This paper describes the cause of fracture in an elbow tube fittings due to deficiencies in the dimensional design and materials selection. The investigation included metallography, fractography, hardness testing and metrology. The results showed that the material was low carbon steel subjected to cold forming and normalized annealing processes during tube production. There were dimensional variations in the tube and the material strength was low.
