This paper is presented in satisfaction of the requirement for two problems in lieu of thesis which are required for the degree, Master of Science. The two problems are: (1) to provide an electric interface between the M6800 microprocessor and the printer; and (2) to design an Arabic character set and to provide the logic required for its implementation. As it would be artificial and impractical to document these problems separately, a single document here is provided.

This problem is involved with attempting to answer two basic questions: (a) Can I, a commercial artist, expand and develop as an artist through screen printing and make valid aesthetic statements unrelated to client and/or product? and (b) Can knowledge of reproduction methods and photo-mechanical techniques be successfully utilized in screen printing for non-commercial purposes? Extensive notes in the form of a journal were maintained as work on the project progressed. These notes, combined with the completed prints, were the sources of data for this paper.

The problem for the project emerged threefold: (1) to further explore the uses of the graphite medium including the possible integration of wet media color on large surfaces, (2) to use the human figure as subject matter, and (3) to explore gessoed drawing surfaces of masonite and paper.

The questions answered by this investigation are as follows: 1. Which silkscreens and stencils will work in screening flat and three-dimensional objects? 2. Which mediums and coloring agents will survive a glaze firing to produce an acceptable image? 3. How can the image be modified by screening during the different stages of a ceramic piece (wet, green, bisque, glazed)? 4. What glazes and glaze applications will be compatible? 5. Generally, what is the relationship between the image and the object?

There were no restrictions as to style or technique, and since my previous works had been realistic, this direction was to be continued during the entire investigation. The primary objective was to create a series of drawings and paintings which would concentrate on the basic facial topography and idiosyncrasies of a constant model with variations in color, scale, medium, and expression.

This paper explores the impact of the organ reform movement on the construction of organs in Texas. E. Dean Beasley also explores the possibilities of further reform for the instrument.

Experimentations with overlays of color within my imagery have developed an interest in surface embellishment resulting from the juxtaposition of overlapping hues, integration of collage, and extended use of mixed-media as a printed visual statement. Past printmaking experiences include exploration of a variety of procedures including lithography, intaglio, and serigraphy. Prints have been executed in edition and monoprints, singular techniques and in combination. Individual techniques were expanded through the use of collage and linear application of graphite.

It is the purpose of this study to visually and technically explore the combination of the direct methods of drawing and painting and the more indirect process of silkscreen printing on canvas. The flexibility of the three technical areas- silkscreen, drawing, and painting- proved to make the combination more feasible.

Interspersed color blend lithography is a technique that facilitates simultaneous multi-colored printing. The problem of color blending was to gain control over the process and explore a variety of uses. The research was entirely experimental. Interspersed color blend lithography is a unique process that allows for the application of any number of colors at one time, and complete freedom in their placement. The results of the investigation produced a process that is at once predictable, simple and immediate.

Our problem was to produce art in a collaborative manner. Due to the nature of our problem, we proposed to explore specific aspects of collaborative art and answer these questions: 1. in what ways is the co-artist's input beneficial? 2. How are the artist's skills broadened by working with a fellow artist? 3. What is involved in developing a professional working relationship between male and female artist? 4. What understanding of differences in working styles is acquired? 5. What are the differences reflected in each artist's earlier works as compared to the collaborative pieces?

The problem of this study will be to provide information on the degree of influence exerted by the choice of ground in the selection of collage elements and the final development of each collage.

This paper describes the creation and impact of Franz Liszt's "Dante" Sonata. Bill Blaine gives historical context and elaborates on the literary and philosophical influences evident in the piece before providing an examination of the music.

The purpose of this project was to investigate the possibilities of reorganizing space by arranging woven modules. These units were to be separable and flexible in regard to their spacial relationships and interrelatedness in any installation. This problem was examined in these specific ways: 1) Is it possible to create a sense of volume in forms woven flat on a standard floor loom as simple, single-layer or double-layer fabrics and later manipulate them into three-dimensional structures? 2) how can fundamentally simple, fibrous materials be utilized to achieve an effect of scale without overpowering their intrinsic qualities? 3) To what extent, if any, will lighting interact with woven fabric to create the illusion of an extended space? 4) can woven modules be created with enough flexibility of form to be responsive to varying relationships to each other and to specific installation spaces?

The purpose of this project is to provide a record, much like the ones left to us by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, of the personal influences which motivated the present artist to function productively as a sculptor for a period of one semester: from September 1, 1975 through December 12, 1975. The methods involved in charting such artistic transpirations consisted of two types: a written diary, daily recorded, which indicated the progress, regression, frustration, inspiration, and perceptions which were experienced by the artist during the three-month period; and a series of personal, emotional self-enquiries.

Three intaglio prints and three drawings will be investigated to answer three specific questions. The questions are: 1. Is it possible to isolate the source of subject matter in my work? 2. What effect do media and subject matter have on each other during image development? and 3. Does my subject matter contained in an entire work contribute to the subject matter of my later works?

As a painter, I have been working the past few years to develop a mature pictoral image and the concepts of space that were flexible enough for me to produce what I believed was a valid art statement. I have investigated several avenues for improving my work, i.e., acquiring certain technical painting skills, reading more to broaden my concepts and imagination, and visiting various art galleries and museums. During an earlier critique it was realized that the majority of my paintings were all very similar in scale. I decided to approach my work on a much larger scale than previously attempted in the hopes of discovering a better, or at least different painting concept.

This paper analyzes Ralph Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel and asserts that the songs are a song cycle rather than just a collection of songs set to to the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson. Richard Porter Cole performs a musical and poetic analysis of the songs and makes suggestions to aid performers of the piece.

During the last several years, my art work has evolved around a developing concept nurtured by a fascination with timeworn relics of the past centered itself around an emotional sensibility toward deteriorating fragmentary remnants of archaeological finds and relics of ancient art, predominately pottery shards and old textiles. I was intrigued and stimulated by the feeling of age and by the beauty of these worn and irregular shapes.

In the fall of 1972 I was required to read Dee Brown's "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" as an "atmosphere setter" for a seminar on artists of the westward expansion in the United States. When I first started making drawings of some of the Indian leaders, I had no idea of doing a series. I also had no idea that Indians and more especially those of the West, would be consuming so much of my time and thoughts for such a long period. In the beginning the drawings were prompted by a fascination with the bone structure of the Indian faces. The high cheekbones, the prominent noses and unusual eyes caused marvelous patterns of light and dark, making the faces very conducive to caricature. As I began to know these faces as individuals and personalities, however, I knew that caricature was not the direction which i wanted to pursue.

The problem of this investigation is to determine if the shrinkage resulting from water loss, which causes cracking in polymer-acrylic emulsion artists' paints, can be controlled to produce a predictable variety of surface textures useful in painting. Preliminary information on the behavior of polymer-emulsion paints was taken from published material such as Mayer's Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques, Woody's Polymer Painting, and various manufacturers' technical publications. Experimental investigations were conducted to observe the media under varied methods of application and conditions of drying. The information gathered in the experiments was used to develop techniques producing a variety of predictable textural alterations, which were used in a series of experimental paintings.
