Pleroma is a digital drama: a work composed of digital animation combined with electroacoustic music, presenting an original dramatic narrative. Pleroma's dramatic elements evoke both the classical form of tragedy and the concept of perceptual paradox. A structural overview of the drama and its characters and a plot synopsis are given to provide context for the critical discussion. Analytical descriptions of Beethoven's Coriolan Overture Op.62 and Mahler's Symphony No. 9 are provided to give background on tragic form and Platonic allegory in music. An investigation into the elements discussed in the analysis of the instrumental works reveals several layers of possible interpretation in Pleroma. Dramatic elements allow for tragic narratives to be constructed, but they are complemented by character associations formed by pitch relationships, stylistic juxtapositions, and instrumentation. This research project evaluates the effectiveness of specific music theory instructional strategies in terms of D. A. Kolb’s theory of experiential learning and Kolb’s typology of individual learning style. The project provides an original methodology for the adaptation of music theory instructional material to the individual learning style types described in Kolb’s typology. The study compares the relative effectiveness of two music theory instructional sequences, one of which is adapted for all of the learning style modalities described in Kolb’s typology, and the other adapted for only a limited number of Kolb’s learning style types. In order to compare the potential “learning outcomes” produced by these instructional sequences, a detailed study is proposed, in which computer based instruction (CBI) will deliver the instructional sequences to research participants and electronically record the participants’ responses. The current study demonstrates the effective aspects of the original methodology and suggests methods for the successful adaptation of music theory instructional material to individual student learning styles.

With the proliferation of Schenkerian theory in the US, Great Britain, and mainland Europe in the past quarter century, the pedagogy of Schenkerian analysis has become an important issue. Schenker himself was suspicious of textbooks with their tendency for artificial codification and over-simplification; rather, he recognized that his “New Teaching” (“Die neue Lehre”) – as he called it – required a different, more “organic” pedagogical approach that was both personal and yet accessible to a wide audience. New digital technologies and the Internet now have made it possible to disseminate Schenker’s pedagogical approach by adapting interactive techniques of Web-based instruction. Schenker’s “new teaching” was as organic as his theory itself – and as novel in the connections it sought to draw between the individualed disciplines of theory, musicology, composition, and performance. The interactive and multi-media components of Web-based instruction enable us to realize Schenker’s own pedagogical approach to Schenkerian analysis instruction.

"Harry Partch's Keyboard Innovation" is a computer-assisted demonstration that introduces the tuning system used primarily by the twentieth-century American composer, Harry Partch. The multimedia product was developed in Director 6.0, and it includes sound and video clips from CDs and videocassettes of Partch's works produced by Phillip Blackburn and distributed by the American Composers Forum. The content of the demonstration involves a 43-tone microtonal tuning system and its application in the music literature. This demonstration will discuss the chronological order in which these prototypes were developed and also includes samples of the tuning of notes in Partch's scale that the novice can experiment with interactively. These tones were synthesized using the Csound scores shown in Appendix B. Materials for this demonstration are based on Harry Partch's Genesis of a Music.

This study made five hypotheses predictions to investigate the effects of counselor religious values on the client's perceptions of the counselor. The appendices included various information including the 5 counselors who were asked to evaluate another counselor on several different measures (playing as a possible client of the particular counselor).

This paper discusses the song cycle Despite and Still by Samuel Barber, created with three poems by Robert Graves, one poem by Theodore Roethke, and part of Jame Joyce's novel Ulysses. Phyllis Bush Thomas describes the feeling created by the song cycle and the compositional style of Samuel Barber.

This paper explores the influence of composer Arnold Schoenberg's tonal language on the work of his pupil, Alban Berg, illustrated in Berg's Four Pieces for Clarinet, Op. 5. Beverly Ann Lavocat introduces the concept of atonality and provides a musical analysis of Berg's piece.

Bach and Chopin were both virtuosi on their respective keyboard instruments and were considered as successful performers. This study analyzes the Influence of the Preludes from the Well-Tempered Clavier of J. S. Bach on the Preludes and Etudes of Chopin. They both exploited their keyboard instruments to the fullest. The study concluded that what Bach achieved in his preludes and fugues, Chopin imitated in the spirit of his age.

This paper evaluates the style of four candezas written for the Beethoven Fourth Piano Concerto, Opus 58. Dennis W. Hay introduces the history of the cadenza before focusing on the works by the individual composers: Beethoven, Brahms, Medtner, and Casadesus.

This paper discusses the portrayal of the character of Carmen in the novel written by Prosper Mérimée and in the opera written by Georges Bizet. Sharon Grahnquist provides historical background to the character and her creation, and offers and interpretation of the intended performance.

This paper discusses the handling of Double Bass in the chamber music written by Gioacchino Rossini and Franz Schubert. Russell Clark White provides historical background to the importance of these contributions before delving into musical analysis of the individual bass parts of these pieces.

This paper evaluates the musical contributions of Jimmy Blanton to the history of jazz bass playing. Rex O. Bozarth investigates the development of the jazz bass throughout the twentieth century, the influences that impacted Blanton's style, and the musical innovations the performer introduced.
