A Computer Program to Optimize Magnets in a Beam Transport System*

A computer program which optimizes the locations and strengths of magnets in a beam transport system has been written for the IBM 704 and 7090 computers Programs have been previously written which trace a ray through a system of magnets and determine its focusing properties When using such a program, one examines the characteristics of the emergent beam and then varies the parameters of the system manually to optimize it In the program which will now be described, the computer itself performs the examination and varies the parameters.

Effects of Insulin of Hepatic Glucose Metabolism and Glucose Utilization by Tissues (open access)

Effects of Insulin of Hepatic Glucose Metabolism and Glucose Utilization by Tissues

The mechanism whereby insulin lowers the blood glucose concentration is currently under extensive investigation. Despite the general agreement that the addition of insulin increases glucose uptake by various isolated tissues, the question has been raised whether administered insulin produces its blood sugar lowering effect in vivo primarily in increasing glucose uptake. Furthermore, it has been suggested that physiologically-released insulin may not exert the same effects as are produced by administered insulin. Attention has also been focused on whether insulin (exogenous or endogenous) exerts its action mainly or entirely on the liver and to what extent insulin influences glucose uptake and glucose production by the liver. The studies to be reported are a continuation of earlier work and are concerned with the effects of insulin, both exogenous and endogenous, on glucose utilization by the tissues and glucose production by the liver under various dietary condition in the unanethetized, intact dog, using C¹⁴ glucose.

Review of Existing and Potential Test Sites in Areas 18, 19, and 20, Pahute Mesa, Nevada Test Site

Abstract: "Recent request for new sites has prompted an overall review of the Pahute Mesa area. The criteria used in this review are that the geology must be favorable and that horizontal spacing of emplacement holes being developed should be 2.5 to 3 times hole depth. The review shows that current emplacement requirements have exhausted available explored sites and have effectively eliminated 90 percent of the blocks of ground geologically favorable for chambered sites."

Value of Desalted Water for Irrigation

From Introduction: "This report contains the results of a research study on the "Value of Desalted Water for Irrigation" undertaken in January 1967 by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Saline Water, United Sates Department of the Interior. The objectives of the study were: a. To determine, through application of desalting techniques, the costs and benefits associated with the progressive decreases in the salinity of irrigation water supplies. b. To identify the possible means of introducing desalted water into irrigation supply systems. To relate current desalting technology to potential applications in agriculture."

Table of Proton-Proton Scattering Phase Shift as Calculated from the One-Pion Exchange Contribution (open access)

Table of Proton-Proton Scattering Phase Shift as Calculated from the One-Pion Exchange Contribution

The phase shifts for proton-proton scattering as calculated from the one-pion exchange contribution (OPEC) alone are of some interest because they describe the scattering correctly in the high angular momentum states, and because in the lower angular momentum states the deviation from the OPEC phases is an indication of the strength of the two-pion and higher exchanges processes. The attached table gives the proton-proton nuclear-bar phase shifts as calculated from OPEC. Phase shifts and mixing parameters are given in degrees, as function of the T, the laboratory kinetic energy of the incoming protons in Mev. Phase shift and mixing parameters are listed in the angular momentum states.

Sea Water Corrosion Test Program (open access)

Sea Water Corrosion Test Program

From Introduction: "The first demonstration plant sponsored by the Office of Saline Water was located in Freeport, Texas, and came 'on stream" in 1961. The incoming sea water was deaerated since both Speller (6) and Uhlig (7) recognized that dissolved oxygen was usually the controlling factor in the corrosion of iron stream condensate at temperatures even as high 400 degrees F. The water was acidified prior to daeration with H2SO4 to decompose the carbonates which subsequently would cause scale when the water was heated. After the carbonates were removed, the pH was raised to the neutral point, again to provide a less corrosive environment."

Ancient Lavas in Shenandoah National Park Near Luray, Virginia (open access)

Ancient Lavas in Shenandoah National Park Near Luray, Virginia

Abstract: In the Blue Ridge Province of northern Virginia, Maryland, and southern Pennsylvania, Lower Cambrian beds are underlain by a thick sequence of greenstone and interbedded sedimentary rocks known as the Catoctin Formation. An area near Luray, Va., was studied to determine the thickness of the formation, its relationship to overlying and underlying rocks, and the original nature of the lavas from which the Catoctin greenstone was derived. There the Catoctin Formation lies unconformably on granitic rocks. Its basal sedimentary layer ranges from a few inches to 150 feet in thickness and contains pebbles of underlying basement rocks. The erosion surface beneath the Catoctin is irregular, and in several places, hills as much as 1,000 feet high were buried beneath the Catoctin lavas. No important time break is indicated between the deposition of the Catoctin Formation and the overlying Cambrian sediments. The original Catoctin lavas were basaltic and were probably normal plateau basalts. Columnar joints, amygdules, sedimentary dikes, flow breccias, low-dipping primary joints, and other primary structures are well preserved.
