Acoustic Flowmeter Prototype Evaluation Tests (open access)

Acoustic Flowmeter Prototype Evaluation Tests

Summary: "Prototype tests of an acoustic flowmeter system were made in a 24-ftdiam power penstock at Oahe Dam to evaluate the system prior to permanent installation in the outlet works at Summersville Dam. Comparative discharge measurements included acoustic, penstock pressure-momentum (Gibson), turbine model test ratings, scroll-case pressure differential (Winter-Kennedy flowmeter), and surge tank volume changes. The acoustic flowmeter measurements were very consistent and many of the comparisons were within 1%. The location of the measuring section for a single-path acoustic flowmeter must be selected to give a known or measurable relation between the flow pattern of the whole section and that along the acoustic path" (p. xi).

Cold-Mold Arc Melting and Casting (open access)

Cold-Mold Arc Melting and Casting

Report issued by the U.S. Bureau of Mines providing updates and additional information related to cold-mold arc melting and casting. Abstract: "This bulletin reviews the historical background of the cold-mold arc-melting technology, with specific references to the development that led to homogeneous zirconium ingots. Descriptions are given of modern production arc-furnaces for vacuum melting of both exotic and conventional metals. Besides zirconium, specific data are given for production of chromium, thorium, and copper. The development of the skull-casting technique for titanium is detailed, and the application of the technique to such refractory metals as molybdenum and tungsten is described. Factors of operation of the apparatus and furnace design are considered" (p. 1).

Geologic Studies, Project Gnome, Eddy County, New Mexico

From abstract: For Project Gnome, part of the Plowshare Program to develop peaceful uses for nuclear energy, a nuclear device was detonated December 10, 1961, underground in rack salt of the Permian Salado Formation southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico. The Geological Survey's investigations on behalf of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission provided basic geologic and geophysical information needed to define preshot and postshot geologic and hydrologic conditions at and near the site. This report describes the geology of the site, some physical and chemical properties of the rocks, and the known effects of the nuclear detonation on the rocks of the site.

Geology of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Tennessee and North Carolina

From Preface: "The present account summarizes the results of a long investigation of the rocks of the Great Smoky Mountains (1946-55) by geologists of the staff of the U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with those of the Tennessee Division of Geology. The technical details of this investigation have already been set forth at length in professional papers of the U.S. Geological Survey. The present account contains the gist of these findings about the rocks of the mountains, and is accompanied by a map and structure sections in which the surface and underground extent of the rocks are displayed."

Geology of the Hot Sulphur Springs quadrangle, Grand County, Colorado (open access)

Geology of the Hot Sulphur Springs quadrangle, Grand County, Colorado

Scope and Purpose of Work: The quadrangle was mapped as part of the U.S. Geological Survey program of classifying and evaluating lands in the Public Domain. Mineral rights for coal had been retained in parts or all of Tps. 2 and 3 N., Rs. 77, 78, and 79 W. These areas are in part underlain by sedimentary rocks of Late Cretaceous(?) and early Tertiary age (Middle Park Formation), and in North Park these rocks are called the Coalmont Formation and contain coal. The chief purpose of the work was to map and study any coal beds found and to make a detailed geologic map that can be used as part of a geological atlas of the United States.

Investigation of Membrane Stack Resistance Increase With a Natural Brackish Water

From Introduction: "An investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Reclamation to identify the cause of causes of this problem with a particular brackish water. The resistance increase of is of great concern principally because of the increase in power consumption that ultimately contributes to a higher cost for product water. Reports show that membrane stack resistance has increased as much as 200 percent over period of several days."

The Status of Meteorological Knowledge as a Factor in Air Pollution Control (open access)

The Status of Meteorological Knowledge as a Factor in Air Pollution Control

The first national Technical Conference on Air Pollution (1) held in this city in 1950 included eight papers on meteorology; the present session contains one. On this basis, one night conclude that recent progress in meteorology has been virtually nonexistent or that the importance of meteorological factors has been diminishing, Neither could be further from the truth, as the number and quality of papers relating to air pollution meteorology in recent scientific and technical sessions will attest. It is particularly appropriate to review the status of meteorological "know-how" at this time, because of the many situations in which the ultimate capability of the atmosphere to absorb pollution is in question. Both in connection with highly toxic materials on the one hand and the "megalopolis" on the other, estimates of the "atmospheric sewer capacity" are becoming increasingly necessary to industrial and municipal planning.
