Self-Diffusion in α-Iron During Compressive Creep

"The influence of compressive creep on the self-diffusivity of α-iron has been measured in the temperature range of 742-885°C. the diffusivity is enchanced in proportion to the strain rate, but this dependence decreases with increasing temperature. The magnitude of the strain is relatively unimportant in this connection. Strain rates from 0 to -2 x 10¯³ sec¯¹ were investigated with a corresponding increase in diffusivity up to 3 x 10³ times. The results are analyzed in terms of vacancy diffusion and the excess vacancies introduced during deformation. It is concluded that grain boundaries are the main vacancy sinks in polycrystalline iron and that the vacancy lifetime is therefore dependent on the grain size."

Electron Requirements of Bonds in Metal Borides

From abstract: "Electrical measurements have been made on CaB6, SrB6, BaB6, YB2, YB4, YB6, and YB12 for the purpose of testing models of the electronic structure of the boron atoms in the four boride types represented. The compounds CaB6, SrB6, and BaB6 were found to be semiconductors. The Hall coefficients of YB4 was also measured, but could not be interpreted because the free electron theory does not provide a theoretical value for comparison with experiment. The results are in agreement with the models proposed."

A Needle in a Haystack

Abstract: "Production of [rho]'s and [omega]'s in [pi]- + p and p + [letter p with a bar over it] interactions is discussed. The [rho] is presumably a J = 1-, 1 = 1 state and thus can decay into 2[pi]'s via a strong coupling. The [omega] is probably J = 1-, 1 = 0 which can also decay into 2[pi]'s via electromagnetic coupling. A theoretical description of this situation is presented in terms of coupled time-dependent Schroedinger equations which mix [rho] and [omega] states that are assumed to be isotopically pure at the time of production. The interference between the two resonances was found to have the effect of extending the 2[pi] spectrum toward the [omega] mass."

Development of Techniques for Power Production From Mixed Fission Products

"Progress is reported on Phase II of a program for the development of a mixed fission product fueled thermoelectric generator. Materials studies are described in which bonded assemblies of bismuth telluride were life tested up to 3000 hours at 350 to 400 deg F hot junction temperature. Data were too inconsistent to define any satisfactory long-life bonding process. Further work is needed to eliminate the process variables. Insulation studies aimed at determining the thermal conductivity of various insulations with different fill gases under reduced pressures are described. Opacified aerogel powder appears to be very promising as an insulation medium for a diffuse heat source. A full- scale simulated test generator aimed at proving out the concept of a diffuse heat source for power generation is described. Progress on the construction of this electrically heated generator and its thermoelectric power converter is related.

Cation Exchange in Acetone-Water-Hydrochloric Acid

Abstract: Distribution coefficients have been measured for the partition of metal ions between cation exchange resin and acetone-water-hydrochloric acid solutions. the differences in distribution coefficients of metal ions are greater in acetone-water media than in aqueous media of the same hydrochloric acid concentration. Using distribution coefficient data, conditions for column separations of mixtures can be selected. Column separations of metal ion mixtures can be effected by eluting with acetone-water-hydrochloric acid solutions of different compositions. Successful separations of a number of mixtures are reported.

Control rod materials, designs, and fabrication processes are compared for their relative economies. Control rod lifetime data are calculated with a simple approximation of nuclear worth depreciation. These data are used in conjunction with the estimated fabrication costs to determine the cost of using several absorber materials in a typical power reactor on a cost-per-year basis. The effect the control system has on core power density and fuel lifetime is included.

Effect of Oxygen on Mechanical Properties of Niobium

From abstract: "The effects of oxygen on some mechanical properties of niobium were studied over the composition range of 20 ppm to 2400 ppm oxygen. The tensile properties of samples of these compositions were studied over the temperature range from room temperature to 500°C. Hardness values were obtained at room temperature only. The following observations and conclusions were made during these studies: 1. Oxygen additions to high purity niobium increase both the yield and tensile strengths of niobium at all temperatures investigated. As the temperature is increased above 250°C the effect of the first 200 ppm of oxygen has more influence than further additions on these strengths of niobium. 2. Strain aging behavior is observed. The peaks in the tensile strength versus temperature curves can be predicted with reliability by the relationship proposed by Cottrell, 3. A mechanism is proposed which, along with Cottrell's segregated atmosphere mechanism, can account for the serrated stress-strain curves obtained. This mechanism offers an explanation of the occurrence of serrations at room temperature, and the mechanism is composition dependent."

"The properties of the muon have been studied for many years and much is now known about this particle. Very accurate measurements of its mass and magnetic moment gave values in the relationship predicted by the Dirac equation and quantum electrodynamics. Experimental evidence indicating that the muon spin is 1/2 is obtained from comparison of precession measurements of the muon bound in certain mesic atoms and from observation of muonium precession. To all appearances, one would conclude that the muon behaves as an unstable electron, but as 206.76 times the mass of that electron. A study of the interaction of the muon with nuclear matter may throw more light on this problem of muon-electron equivalence."

Preliminary Experiments on the Dissolution of Beryllium Based Fuels in Ammonium Fluoride Solutions

Some preliminary measurements have been made of the rate of dissolution of beryllium when refluxed with ammonium fluoride solution. The rate of dissolution exhibits pseudo first order dependence on the "free" fluoride concentration defined as the concentration of total fluoride less that assumed to be present as BeF4. The solubility of uranium metal in ammonium fluoride - beryllium fluoride solutions increases with free fluoride concentration, where the uranium is present in solutions as U(1V). Thorium metal is attacked only slightly under similar conditions. Beryllium may be selectively leached from UBe13 by ammonium fluoride solutions if the fine A-/Be mole ratio is greater than 4:1. The solubility of uranium under these conditions suggests that this is not a satisfactory solvent for mixtures of these alloys with Be when the U/Be ratio is small, but that it could be used successfully as a decladding agent for an oxide fuel clad in beryllium meta.

Some numerical calculations have been done which permit the deduction of many properties of the synchrotron oscillation problem. For the presentation of the numerical results, it is useful to review the formulation framework to which the results are to be fitted. These are worked out for an arbitrary circular accelerator. The algebra woud have to be modified slightly to include straight sections but the numerical results are still useful.

"The magnetic properties of color centers were studied to obtain information regarding electron traps in insulators. Experiments designed to determine the equation governing the recovery of resonance after saturation were carried out. Relatively large samples were prepared by the method of additive coloration. KCl and RbCl crystals were used. Resonance saturation as a function of concentration was investigated and no significant dependence found. Measurements of the unsaturated susceptibility were made at liquid nitrogen and liquid helium temperatures. The bleaching of the F-center to form the B-band produced a different resonance. The equipment for observing the saturation and recovery of a portion of the resonance at 4 deg K is described. A theoretical examination was made of the interaction between the vibration of the ions around a negative-ion vacancy in an alkali halide and an electron trapped at that site. (M.C.G.)."
