Memorandum presenting an investigation of the effects of higher degrees of forming in biaxial stretch-forming of polymethyl methacrylate to about 50-percent strain. Sheets of commercial cast polymethyl methacrylate were hot-stretched approximately 100 and 150 percent, respectively, and tests were conducted on this material and on unstretched cotton material. Results regarding the standard tensile tests, stress-solvent crazing, surface abrasion tests, and x-ray diffraction patterns are provided.

Report presenting an investigation at Mach number 1.61 of the effects of chordwise fences and attached tabs on the hinge-moment characteristics of a half-delta tip control mounted on a 60 degree delta wing. Testing occurred over a range of angles of attack and control deflection. Results indicated that, in general, the effect of fences was to improve the linearity of hinge-moment curves and increase the negative values of slope parameters of hinge moment against control deflection and angle of attack.

Free-Fall Measurements of the Effects of Wing-Body Interference on the Transonic Drag Characteristics of Swept-Wing-Slender-Body Configurations

Report presenting the results of testing of bodies and wing-body combinations by the free-fall method in order to provide information about drag characteristics of airplanes and their component parts at transonic speeds. Two models with a fineness-ratio-12 body of revolution with 45 degree sweptback wings located at different positions were dropped and equipped with improved drag measuring instrumentation and pressure measuring orifices on the portion of the body expected to be influenced by the presence of the wing. Results regarding pressure data and drag data are provided.

Configurations investigated incorporated a cylindrical control sleeve which confined the injected fuel at low over-all fuel-air ratios to about 40 percent of the engine air flow. This provided an optimum fuel-air mixture over a portion of the flame holder when the over-all fuel-air ratio was about 0.02."

Wind-Tunnel Investigation at Low Speed of the Rolling Stability Derivatives of a 1/9-Scale Powered Model of the Convair XFY-1 Vertically Rising Airplane, TED No. NACA DE 373

An experimental investigation has been conducted in the Langley stability tunnel at low speed to determine the rolling stability derivatives of a 1/9-scale powered model of the Convair XFY-1 vertically rising airplane. Effects of thrust coefficient were investigated for the complete model and for certain components of the model. Effects of control deflections and of propeller blade angle were investigated for the complete model. Most of the tests were made through an angle-of-attack range from about -4deg to 29deg, and the thrust coefficient range was from 0 to 0.7. In order to expedite distribution of these data, no analysis of the data has been prepared for this paper.

Investigation of Blade Failures in a J34, Eleven-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor

Report presenting a vibrational survey conducted during normal operation of a production eleven-stage axial-flow compressor powered as part of a complete turbojet engine. After serious third-stage vibration was detected, an investigation was conducted to study and eliminate the vibration with several component configurations. The vibrational source was determined to be an aerodynamic phenomenon related to a stall, but a new inlet-guide-vane assembly with a 4-percent increase in inlet area eliminated the vibration and increased the engine thrust 4 percent.

Time-History Data of Maneuvers Performed by a Republic F84G Airplane During Squadron Operational Training

Preliminary results of one phase of a control-motion study program involving several jet fighter-type airplanes are presented in time-history form and are summarized as maximum measured quantities plotted against indicated airspeed. The results pertain to approximately 1,000 maneuvers performed by a Republic F-84G jet-fighter airplane during squadron operational training. The data include most tactical maneuvers of which the F-84G airplane is capable. Maneuvers were performed at pressure altitudes of 0 to 30,000 feet with indicated airspeeds ranging from the stalling speed to approximately 515 knots.
