The Separation of Cerium from the Trivalent Rare Earths Using Hydrogen Peroxide and Sodium Acetate

At the present time, cerium-144 and premtheium-147 are the two fission product rare earths that appear most promising for use as the heat source in isotopic power units. Under proper conditions, cerium and the trivalent rare earths can be extracted from the Purex fission product waste stream as an insoluble sodium-rare earth double sulfate. A reprecipitation as the double sulfate, dissolution of the hydroxide, serves to give almost complete separation from the corrosion products, inert constituents of the waste, and from most of the fission products. The cerium and the trivalent rare earths must then be separated from each other. In the case of cerium recovery, it is necessary to remove the trivalent rare earths in order to maximize the specific activity of the cerium. If promethium is the desired product, a preliminary cerium separation is desirable to protect the ion-exchange resin (used for separating promethium from its adjacent rare earths) from the intense high-energy radiation from cerium.

A Spectrometer for Study of Neutron Activation of Beryllium-7 as a Function of Energy

Abstract. A neutron diffraction crystal spectrometer with a resolution of 13 microseconds per meter and monochromatic beam intensity up to 10(4)n/cm(2)=sec in the range 0.012-0.400 ev has been constructed for study of the activation cross section of Be7 as a function of energy in the thermal region. First preliminary results using ZnS(Ag) as a detector suggest the possibility of a resonance for the Be7(n,p)Li7 reaction in the region of 0.025-0.050 ev.

A pneumatic proportional-plus -integral shock-positioning control unit was investigated for controlling a ram-jet engine at a flight Mach number of 2.5 and altitudes of 50,000 to 65,000 feet. A satisfactory of attack, the control action was marginal for the same control settings used at zero angle of attack.

Investigation of Blade Failures in a J34, Eleven-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor

Report presenting a vibrational survey conducted during normal operation of a production eleven-stage axial-flow compressor powered as part of a complete turbojet engine. After serious third-stage vibration was detected, an investigation was conducted to study and eliminate the vibration with several component configurations. The vibrational source was determined to be an aerodynamic phenomenon related to a stall, but a new inlet-guide-vane assembly with a 4-percent increase in inlet area eliminated the vibration and increased the engine thrust 4 percent.

Time-History Data of Maneuvers Performed by a Republic F84G Airplane During Squadron Operational Training

Preliminary results of one phase of a control-motion study program involving several jet fighter-type airplanes are presented in time-history form and are summarized as maximum measured quantities plotted against indicated airspeed. The results pertain to approximately 1,000 maneuvers performed by a Republic F-84G jet-fighter airplane during squadron operational training. The data include most tactical maneuvers of which the F-84G airplane is capable. Maneuvers were performed at pressure altitudes of 0 to 30,000 feet with indicated airspeeds ranging from the stalling speed to approximately 515 knots.

From Summary: "An investigation of the characteristics of a full-scale supersonic-type propeller has been made in the Langley 16-foot transonic tunnel with the 6000-horsepower propeller dynamometer. The tests covered a range of blade angles from 20.2 degrees to 60.2 degrees at forward Mach numbers up to 0.96. The results showed that envelope efficiency at an advance ratio of 2.8 decreased from 86 percent to 72 percent when the forward Mach number was increased from 0.70 to 0.96."

A comparison of the experimental and theoretical loading over triangular wings in sideslip at supersonic speeds

The results of an experimental investigation of the load distribution over two triangular wings in sideslip at Mach numbers from 1.20 to 1.79 are presented and compared with theory. The two wings tested have identical plan form, 45 degrees sweepback of the leading edge, and an aspect ratio of 4.0. One model was composed of round-nose airfoil sections and the other of sharp-nose, biconvex sections. For both wings the maximum thickness of streamwise sections was 6 percent and was located at the 30-percent chord.

"The problem of oscillating lifting surface of finite span in subsonic compressible flow is reduced to an integral equation. The kernel of the integral equation is approximated by a simpler expression, on the basis of the assumption of sufficiently large aspect ratio. "Tests were conducted to determine the effect of engine-operating variables and internal coolants on spark-advance requirements of a single cylinder from a 12-cylinder liquid-cooled engine for maximum take-off power and maximum cruise economy. The effects of fuel-air ratio, engine speed, air flow (charge density), mixture temperature, and internal coolants on peak-power (optimum) spark advance were investigated. In addition, tests were conducted to determine the effect of spark advance on the knock-limited engine performance at several mixture temperatures for conditions simulating take-off, high-power cruise, and low-power cruise" (p. 1).

On a New Method for Calculating the Potential Flow Past a Body of Revolution

"A new method is presented for obtaining the velocity potential of the flow about a body of revolution moving uniformly in the direction of its axis of symmetry in a fluid otherwise at rest. This method is based essentially on the fact that the form of the differential equation for the velocity potential is invariant with regard to conformal transformation of the meridian plane. By means of the conformal transformation of the meridian profile into a circle a system of orthogonal curvilinear coordinates is obtained, the main feature of which is that one of the coordinate lines is the meridian profile itself" (p. 7).

"Tests were made of eight full-scale propellers of different shape at various tip speeds up to about 1,000 feet per second. The range of blade-angle settings investigated was from 10 degrees to 30 degrees at the 0.75 radius. The results indicate that a loss in propulsive efficiency occurred at tip speeds from 0.5 to 0.7 the velocity of sound for the take-off and climbing conditions" (p. 517).

A comprehensive investigation has been carried on with full-scale models in the NACA 20-foot wind tunnel, the general purpose of which is to furnish information in regard to the physical functioning of the composite propeller-nacelle unit under all conditions of take-off, taxiing, and normal flight. This report deals exclusively with the cowling characteristics under condition of normal flight and includes the results of tests of numerous combinations of more than a dozen nose cowlings, about a dozen skirts, two propellers, two sizes of nacelle, as well as various types of spinners and other devices.
