"The theory of Lagrangian multipliers is applied to the problem of finding both upper and lower limits to the true compressive buckling stress of a clamped rectangular plate. The upper and lower limits thus bracket the true stress, which cannot be exactly found by the differential-equation approach. The procedure for obtaining the upper limit, which is believed to be new, presents certain advantages over the classical Rayleigh-Ritz method of finding upper limits" (p. 213).

Report presenting a preliminary investigation of cone-type diffusers designed for minimum spillage at the inlet during operation in the supersonic tunnel at Mach number 1.85. Pressure recoveries of a series of stationary cones with included angles from 20 degrees to 60 degrees were investigated. Results regarding the pressure recovery with stationary cones and pressure recovery of movable-cone configurations are provided.

This paper presents a critical comparison made between experimental and theoretical results for the aerodynamic characteristics of wings at supersonic flight speeds. As a preliminary, a brief, nonmathematical review is given of the basic assumptions and general findings of supersonic wing theory in two and three dimensions. Published data from two-dimensional pressure-distribution tests are then used to illustrate the effects of fluid viscosity and to assess the accuracy of linear theory as compared with the more exact theories which are available in the two-dimensional case. Finally, an account is presented of an NACA study of the over-all force characteristics of three-dimensional wings at supersonic speed.

The following report contains two parts on the analysis of astatine, neptunium and plutonium. Part A discusses a bent crystal focusing X-ray spectrometer that has been designed and built for the observation of the X-and gamma-rays emitted in association with radioactive decay. The instrument uses proportional counter detection and is described, as well as associated electronic circuits. The plutonium L X-rays from Cm-242 and the neptunium L X-rays from Am-241 have been measures. Values of the energies and abundances are reported. Then in Part B, it discusses some isotopes of astatine hitherto unreported that have been observed in bombardments of bismuth on the University of California 184" cyclotron.

Report presenting a method of generating variable Mach number supersonic flow in a channel of fixed geometry by the removal of air through uniform porous walls. Calculated porosity distributions are presented for several minimum-length nozzles designed to operate at Mach numbers up to 2.0. Experimental and analytical data is presented.

Report presenting rocket-powered flight investigations for the purpose of comparing damping-in-roll results obtained from a torque-nozzle technique. Results regarding basic aerodynamic quantities, data from the torque-nozzle technique, wing-dropping phenomenon, and comparison of the values of the two techniques are provided.

This report provides a table that summarizes the data taken from investigations of gamma radiation of the Bulk Shielding Reactor in an iron-water mixture. The results are plotted on a graph also provided in this document.

Memorandum presenting the results of an investigation to establish rupture and total-deformation strengths at 1200 and 1800 degrees Fahrenheit for typical commercial treatments of low-carbon N-155 alloy. The results show that there were large differences in strength between the heats of bar stock at temperatures above 1200 degrees Fahrenheit except when a 2200 degree Fahrenheit solution treatment was used.

Preliminary results of tests wit the Westinghouse 100A pump indicate that Al2)3 and tungsten carbide coated bearing-journal assemblies prepared by the Linde process are not promising as substitutes for the graphitar-stellite combination. The front Al2O3 assembly failed at start-up with water and both front and rear tungsten carbide assemblies failed after 121 hours with water at 245 C.

Technique used in deriving values of the linac ball tuner settings to produce various fields is discussed briefly, and tables showing ball tuner change numbers and values used in making up the ball tuner change numbers are given.

Report documenting standard x-ray diffraction powder patterns for various compounds, intended to replace previous data or provide information for new substances. It describes the methods and, for each substance, outlines any previous data as well as information about the sample used and structural data, with a table of diffraction patterns.

Recent studies suggest that the primary action of insulin is on the permeability of cell membranes. This idea may account for the effects of the hormone in broken cell preparations as well as in tissue preparations with intact cells if the concept of the cell membrane is broadened to include endoplasmic reticular extensions and the membranes of subcellular organelles. Following on the initial demonstration that insulin was bound to muscle and the elucidation of the structure of insulin, evidence was presented that this binding involves a sulfur-sulfur linkage between hormone and target tissue. In the present work, skeletal muscle cell ghosts were prepared for use in studying the chemical nature of the attachment of insulin to a relatively pure cell membrane preparation.
