The NBS Standard Hygrometer (open access)

The NBS Standard Hygrometer

Report describing a gravimetric hygrometer that serves as the NBS standard instrument for the measurement of the moisture content of gases on an absolute basis in terms of mixing ratio (mass water vapor/ unit mass of dry gas). The National Bureau of Standards and other laboratory reference and working instruments are compared and calibrated with this instrument. The measuring operation involves the absorption of the water vapor from a water vapor-gas mixture by a solid desiccant and the determination of the mass of this water vapor by precision weighing; it also involves the determination of the volume of the associated gas of known density by counting the fillings of two calibrated stainless steel cylinders. The construction and operation of the instrument is described. Discussions of the tests and calibrations of component parts, and of the sources of errors also are included. There is also an analysis of the random and systematic errors effecting the overall accuracy in the determination of mixing ratio.

Synchrotron Oscillations (open access)

Synchrotron Oscillations

Some numerical calculations have been done which permit the deduction of many properties of the synchrotron oscillation problem. For the presentation of the numerical results, it is useful to review the formulation framework to which the results are to be fitted. These are worked out for an arbitrary circular accelerator. The algebra woud have to be modified slightly to include straight sections but the numerical results are still useful.

Iteration Methods for Non-Linear Problems (open access)

Iteration Methods for Non-Linear Problems

The methods of successive displacements or relaxation methods are investigated for a class of nonlinear problems. In particular it is shown that these methods are applicable to a large class of nonlinear problems arising from variational problems which yield elliptic equations. Constructive existence and uniqueness theorems are presented for the discrete problem and criteria are given for a practical method of obtaining solutions. The example of a discrete Plateau problem is used to illustrate the feasibility of the results. The processes are also shown to apply to uniformly elliptic problems.

Some Computational Methods for the Study of Diatomic Molecules

"The present work describes some computer-oriented techniques for the application of the laws of quantum mechanics to the problems of determining basic structure of diatomic molecules. At times, calculations of the type described here yield results which can be compared directly with experiment to check the validity of the hypotheses and technique used they may predict the results of unobserved experimental phenomena; and, in many instances, they provide quantities which are necessary for the interpretation of experimental data but which cannot be directly measured."

Scale "Up or Down" Analysis for Prototype Test (open access)

Scale "Up or Down" Analysis for Prototype Test

Introduction: In conjunction with the final design and development of a 70 MW sodium intermediate heat exchanger and a sodium steam generator, an analysis is required which can be used as a basis for a determination to scale up or scale down the designs. Included in this analysis are those considerations leading to the recommendation of the best prototype test unit and to some of the limits imposed on scaling up or down when considering future applications of designs other than those actually tested. In addition, these considerations include aspects required to accurately predict the performance, operation, mechanical reliability, and feasibility of fabrication of the 70 MW design.

Euorochemic Assistance: Chemical Technology Division Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, November, 1958. (Sections 1.0, 5.0, 6.0, 8.0 of ORNL CF-58-11-93)

To better understand the solvent extraction process much effort has been and is being expended at ORNL and elsewhere to measure reaction kinetics of the extraction reactions. To date these efforts have been largely unsuccessful, due to the attempt to apply homogeneous reaction kinetics to two-phase systems. An optical method has been devised for analyzing the concentration profile in the vicinity of a quiescent interface during steady-state diffusion at rather large molecular fluxes. The system under study is the extraction of uranyl ion from water by a TBP solution. Considerable effort has been directed to eliminating leaks in the diffusion cell and testing the optical system/

In order to make rational predictions of the operating characteristics of uranium anion exchange contactors, an understanding of the mechanism and kinetics of the exchange is necessary. Toward this objective an effort is being made to determine the equilibrium sorption isotherms and rates of sorption of uranium on the anion exchange resin Dovex 21K.
