Experimental investigation of effects of moderate sideslip on the flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at low speed

The flow fields near a 45 degree swept-wing-fuselage combination at moderate angles of sideslip (plus-or-minus 8 degrees), as determined experimentally at low speed, are presented as variations with chordwise distance for various spanwise and vertical locations and angles of attack. The results indicated that for positions close to the fuselage (on and near the plane of symmetry) changes in the angle of sideslip caused large changes in the flow-field characteristics and particularly in the local angles of sideslip, which in some cases were nearly double the static angle of sideslip.

This, along with the need for a permanent canning line identification, resulted in a request for a machine to automatically stamp HAPO fuel elements on a production basis.

A flight evaluation of the longitudinal stability characteristics associated with the pitch-up of a swept-wing airplane in maneuvering flight at transonic speeds

This report presents the results of flight measurements of longitudinal stability and control characteristics made on a swept-wing jet aircraft to determine the origin of the pitch-up encountered in maneuvering flight at transonic speeds. For this purpose measurements were made of elevator angle, tail angle of attack, and wing-fuselage pitching moments (obtained from measurements of the balancing tail loads).

Testing occurred at a designated Reynolds number based on the mean aerodynamic chord of the wing at 50 degrees sweep for average test conditions. Results regarding the effect of chord extensions at 50 degrees, 60 degrees, and 20 degrees sweep, effect of chord extensions on lateral stability, and a comparison with different wing modifications are provided.

Simulated Altitude Performance of Combustors for the 24C Jet Engine: 2: 24C-4 Combustor

"The performance of a 24C-4 combustor was investigated with three different combustor baskets and five modifications of these baskets at conditions simulating static (zero-ram) operation of the 24C jet engine over ranges of altitude and engine speed to determine and improve the altitude operational limits of the 24C combustor. Information was also obtained regarding combustion characteristics, the fuel-flow characteristics of the fuel manifolds, and the combustor total-pressure drop. NACA modifications, which consisted of blocking rows of holes on the baskets, increased the minimum point on the altitude-operational-limit curve, which occurs at low engine speeds, for a narrow-upstream-end basket by 8000 feet (from 23, 000 to 31,000 ft) and for a wide-upstream-end basket by 21,000 feet (from 12, 000 to 34,000 ft)" (p. 1).

The Metabolism of Chyle Cholesterol in the Rat

Abstract: "Observations on the metabolism of chyle cholesterol in the rat show that exogenous cholesterol entering the systemic circulation in chyle exists in lipoproteins of low density (including chylomicrons) migrating with a high Sf rate (i.e.>400) in the ultracentrifuge. Following entry into the systemic circulation these molecules are rapidly removed from the plasma. This "clearing" of serum chyle cholesterol is a tissue phenomenon, the liver being the predominant site. Within the liver the chyle cholesterol esters are at least partially hydrolyzed; hydrolysis apparently does not occur in the plasma to any appreciable extent. After its entry into the liver exogenous cholesterol, if normally metabolized, presumably mixes with and becomes indistinguishable from cholesterol produced by endogenous synthesis."

Radiation Problems of the Chemical Plant

"Absorption measurements have been made in a large body of water to evaluate the contribution to the radiation intensity produced by the degradation of radiation without absorption. Radiation intensities three times those expected from a simple exponential absorption were found. Scattering from the air of gamma radiation has been measured and has been found to agree satisfactorily with theoretical predictions. The penetration of radiation through curved pipes in shielding has been measured and been found to be a flat topped function. A 2" pipe bent in the arc of a circle of 7' chord and a 10' radius gives a reduction intensity over the intensity in air at the same distance of 2.5X10⁴."

Study of Low Frequency Molecular Motions in HF, KHF2, KH2F3 and NaH2F3

The spectra of KHF2, KH2F3, NaH2F3, liquid and solid HF were measured between 1200 and 30 cm-1 by the inelastic scattering of "cold neutrons" (0.005e.v.). The spectrum of KHF2 is in agreement with previous infrared measurements and shows a peak at 147 mV corresponding to a deformation frequency v2 of the F-H-F group and a broad peak at 13 mV due to a libration of this group. The observed spectra for KH2F3, NaH2F3 solid and liquid HF were compared with that for KHF2 considering the known results that the F-F distance increases, the position of the H atom between the two fluorines becomes more asymmetrical, and the strength of the hydrogen bond decreases in going from the HF2- ion to H2F3- ion to HF. In this comparison the known structure of the H2F3- ion is considered as being intermediate between that of HF2- and the zig-zag hydrogen bonded chains in solid HF. As a result, the lines observed at 112 mV and 67 mV in the H2F3- spectra and in HF respectively are associated with the deformation frequency v2 of the H-F-H group in these compounds.
