[Postcard of First Theatre in California]

Postcard of a long one story building with green accent windows and greenery growing at the sides of the house. On the edges of the picture, it is described as "First Theatre in California, Monterey, California." The back of the postcard adds, "The First Theatre This was one of California's proudest spots in early days. Here Spanish, Mexicans, and Americans gathered for entertainment and diversion. A long rectangular Adobe built by John A. Swan, popularly known as Jack Swan, pioneer of 1843, who opened a saloon and boarding house. At the close of the Mexican War, some disbanded U. S. soldiers gave an amateur performance here which was so successful that they induced Jack Swan to fit up the long wing of his saloon for a theatre. The beloved Jenny Lind is said to have sung here on her American tour in 1850-52."

Postcard of the carefully green and red grounds where two brown-clothed monks walk. The white mission, with its stone arches and two stories, has golden fencing around the porch and red tiled roofing. The top of the postcard labels it as "Santa Barbara Mission and Grounds, Founded 1786." The back of the postcard adds, "Santa Barbara Mission and Grounds, Founded 1786 Mission Santa Barbara, California 1786, is one of the best constructed of the California missions. It is in good state of preservation and surrounded by beautiful gardens. Religious services are held here regularly."

The top of the picture describes the picture as " "El Paseo de la Guerra", Santa Barbara, California." The back of the postcard adds, "A rare reminder of old Spanish residency in California. Built by Captain Jose De la Guerra, who served for many years as commandant of Santa Barbara. Distinguished people were entertained here and this household was famous for its hospitality. Descendants of the original owners still reside in the east wing, and adjacent is a charming Spanish street of shops."

Postcard of two houses behind a wall of lush flora. The first is cream colored with a red tiled roof. The second is two stories tall, with a balcony wrapping around the second floor, with white accents and brown roofing. The edges of the picture describe it as "Sherman and Halleck Headquarters and the Thomas O. Larkin House Monterey, California." The back of the postcard adds, "The Larkin House In 1832, Thomas O. Larkin came to Monterrey. He opened a Wholesale and Retail store, and became the first and only United States Consul to California. Next to the Larkin House, is an old adobe, built by Larkin in 1834. Here was headquartered William Tecumseh Sherman, when he was stationed at Monterey. At that time, the man who was later to be a famous Civil War General was a Lieutenant. General Halleck was also headquartered here. Sherman as a youth in Monterey, figured in one of Monterey's wistful legends."
