Final report on Production Test 105-8-P -- Film formation (open access)

Final report on Production Test 105-8-P -- Film formation

Tests made prior to beginning operation of the 100 Areas showed that the cooling water had a tendency to deposit a film upon the slug and tubs surfaces. This film would manifest itself as an increase in the pressure drop through the tubes and its most serious affect would be the resultant decrease in the slug to water host transfer coefficient which would increase the slug surface temperature, causing greatly accelerated corrosion rates. It was thus proposed to study film formation an a production test. This report discusses this test.

Review of stuck slugs

Records show that difficulty has been encountered with the discharge of two tubes in B Pile, twelve in the D Pile, and fifteen in the F Pile during the period from initial start-up until March 15, 1948. In sixteen cases the tubes have been replaced, six of the tubes which were in the fringe have been made air tubes, four did not warrant replacement, and three are to be replaced in the future. General statistics for these twenty-nine tubes are presented with additional details in this report.

Health Hazard From a Long-Lived Rare Gas Activity (open access)

Health Hazard From a Long-Lived Rare Gas Activity

In considering the health hazard of long-lived rare gas activity as a complication of the stack gas problem, the author evaluates briefly two physical-physiological conditions: first, that the body is subjected to external radiation from an infinite cloud of activity, and, second, that the gaseous activity is respired and its daughter products are deposited in the lungs. It is concluded that no additional hazard is to be expected from the long-lived gaseous activity.

Trip Report, December 16--21, 1949

December 16--20, 1949 were spent in inspection of the equipment of the Naval Pilot Channel Test Rig at the Oak Ridge pile, observation of its maintenance and use, and in discussions with the test operating personnel, and members of the H.P. and pile operating divisions. December 21 was spent at the Argonne National Laboratories, Naval Reactor Division, in inspection of the test rig under construction for use at the H pile. Dr. Etherington requested that I express their desire to arrange that an Argonne scientist be at Hanford with the test rig to act in an advisory capacity, for consultation, and to prepare such reports to Argonne as they may need to call for as the test progresses.

Requirements for heater test element (open access)

Requirements for heater test element

The test unit is to simulate the conditions existing in the ``active``section of a pile process tube. This section is loaded with 64 slugs each of length equal to 4.3767 inches, giving an overall active length of 23.34 feet. The figure of 4.3767 inches is the overall length of the aluminum can, rather than that of the slug proper. The calculations tabulated on the accompanying data sheet are representative of the conditions of operation of the ``maximum performance tube`` in the pile. The resistance of a heater element with the specified wall thickness is such as to give a total heating of 552 Kw (corresponding to an 800 mw operating level) with a current of 13,000 amperes flowing through the tube. The heating distribution is a sine curve with a maximum heating of 33.56 Kw/ft. at the center. No attempt will be made to simulate the heating distribution in the aluminum end cap.
