Experiments on the Effect of Atomic Electrons on the DecayConstant of Be7 II. (open access)

Experiments on the Effect of Atomic Electrons on the DecayConstant of Be7 II.

A comparison of the decay constants of Be{sup 7} in beryllium oxide and in beryllium fluoride has given {lambda}{sub BeO}-{lambda}{sub BeF{sub 2}} = (+1.375 {+-} 0.053)10{sup -3}{lambda}{sub BeO} thus showing a definite effect of the chemical binding on the radioactive decay constant.

Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis III (open access)

Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis III

Although the overall reaction of photosynthesis can be specified with some degree of certainty (CO{sub 2} + H{sub 2}O + light {yields} sugars + possibly other reduced substances), the intermediates through which the carbon passes during the course of this reduction have, until now, been largely a matter of conjecture. The availability of isotopic carbon, that is, a method of labeling the carbon dioxide, provides the possibility of some very direct experiments designed to recognize these intermediates and, perhaps, help to understand the complex sequence and interplay of reactions which must constitute the photochemical process itself. The general design of such experiments is an obvious one, namely the exposure of the green plant to radioactive carbon dioxide and light under a variety of conditions and for continually decreasing lengths of time, followed by the identification of the compounds into which the radioactive carbon is incorporated under each condition and time period. From such data it is clear that in principle, at least, it should be possible to establish the sequence of compounds in time through which the carbon passes on its path from carbon dioxide to the final products. In the course of shortening the photosynthetic times, one times, one …

P Division monthly report, May 1949 (open access)

P Division monthly report, May 1949

This progress report discusses activities for the P Division for the month of May 1949. The nominal operating level for both B and F Piles was 275 megawatts (MW) throughout the month except for outages listed under Area Activities. The D Pile operated at 275 MW until May 23 when the nominal level was raised to 290 MW in the first step of the program covered in Production Test No. 105-260-P to evaluate the feasibility of operating piles at higher power levels. A total of 44 tons of metal, at an average concentration of 285 megawatt days/ton (MWD/ton), was discharged from the piles during the month. Considerable difficulty was experienced during the month with stuck tubes containing Class IV (alpha-rolled, triple-dipped, randomly transformed) metal. A total of nine tubes with concentrations in the range of 320--370 MV/ton was encountered. As a result of these difficulties with the Class IV material, future discharges of this type metal will be limited to concentrations in the range 300--320 MWD. Approximately one ton of Class V (alpha-rolled, triple-dipped, completely transformed) metal was discharged at a concentration of 368 MV/ton for test purposes. Inspection of this material indicated that all the slugs were in satisfactory …

Investigation of the use of a recycle stream to mediate hydrogen transfer to improve the conversion of eastern oil shale to liquid products (open access)

Investigation of the use of a recycle stream to mediate hydrogen transfer to improve the conversion of eastern oil shale to liquid products

The processing of eastern oil shale has long been known to require the addition of hydrogen to increase the oil yield. Several researchers, have investigated the use of both high pressure hydrogen and hydrogen donor solvents. Much of the donor solvent work has used pure, compounds such as tetralin and has not addressed the use of-a more realistic solvent such as one derived from the production process itself. The work reported herein is for the research Task 1.2.2, Process Studies, in the Annual Project Plan, October l, 1990--September 30, 1991, of the Cooperative Agreement. In the study, a shale oil-derived, recycle oil was used to mediate the transfer of hydrogen to eastern oil shale. The work was divided into two main parts which correspond to the two main portions of the Hydrogen-Extraction (H-E{trademark}) process: (1) the shale oil extraction which involves the use of a donor solvent to aid in the extraction of the shale oil and (2) the regeneration of the donor solvent to a hydrogen-rich state ready for recycle. The results of the investigation to evaluate shale oil extraction using a shale oil-derived donor solvent suggest that temperature had the, greatest effort on organic conversion. At a temperature of …

Graphite contaminant tests for DR&H piles (C-206A, HW24, C-165A, HW24)

This report outlines plans for tests of the graphite stack during lay up in the pile structures. Measurements are planned upon completion of layers 20, 60, and 102, which will require not more than 16 hours each. The test method will require restriction of Construction personnel from the areas immediately adjacent to the pile. Precise boundaries will be set up in collaboration with H I Division personnel prior to the test.

Poison patterns for counteracting rod failures (open access)

Poison patterns for counteracting rod failures

This report contains the calculation of the number and spacing of poison columns required to hold a 105 pile in the following cases: (1) complete failure of horizontal rods, (2) complete failure of all rods. Using 10% Cd 90% Pb poison columns of 1.44 inch diameter, it is found that 17 poison columns are required to hold the pile in case of complete failure of horizontal rods, and 65 poison columns are required to hold the pile in case of complete failure of all rods.

Graphite expansion committee meeting of June 6, 1947 (open access)

Graphite expansion committee meeting of June 6, 1947

The gas thermometer in the F Pile has been overhauled and re-calibrated. The readings are still in agreement with the readings from the graphite thermocouples. A similar overhaul of the gas thermometer in the D Pile will be made during June. The progress of further outward bowing of Tube 2496-D can not be followed satisfactorily even though readings are obtained from both inlet and outlet ends of the tube. Preliminary results obtained from the one-tube mock-up suggest the possibility that the graphite adjacent to the gun barrels in the upper part of the D Pile may fracture after an additional expansion of about 50%, and that this fracturing may distort the tube locally so that 1.44-inch diameter pieces can not be passed through the tube. There is definite indication that continued expansion of the graphite in the D Pile is causing an increase in both the frequency and severity of gun-barrel binding. The committee endorses the proposal that tubes in the top corners of the F Pile which have yet to be discharged for the first time should be left empty rather than re-loaded. This move would be in the direction of reducing the size of the pile in anticipation …
