Brief history of the Office of Energy Research and Development: Federal Energy Office/Federal Energy Administration

A number of Important Issues in energy research and development which warrant special attention by the Energy Research and Development Office (ERDO) are identified and examined. Six matters considered to be of sufficient weight to be labeled Important Issues are: nuclear reactor siting policy: nuclear energy centers; the development of solar electric power; exploitation of western oil shale; improvements in mining technology for coal; assuring uranium fuel supplies; and automotive energy systems. The environmental issue is treated separately. Actions that ERDO can take to help resolve the issues are discussed.

RIGID URETHANE FOAM BASED ON METHYLALPHA-(D)-GLUCOSIDE AND E-CAPROLACTONE

A study was made of resins based on methyl-alpha-(D)-glucoside. Foams prepared using this resin and a prepolymer based on polymethylene polyphenyl isocyanate had excellent high temperature strength when tested At 400°F (301.1°C). Best results were obtained with methyl glucoside purchased as a 65-percent water solution containing 30 percent beta-methyl-glucoside.

Irradiation experience with HTGR fuels in the Peach Bottom Reactor (open access)

Irradiation experience with HTGR fuels in the Peach Bottom Reactor

Fuel performance in the Peach Bottom High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) is reviewed, including (1) the driver elements in the second core and (2) the test elements designed to test fuel for larger HTGR plants. Core 2 of this reactor, which is operated by the Philadelphia Electric Company, performed reliably with an average nuclear steam supply availability of 85 percent since its startup in July 1970. Core 2 had accumulated a total of 897.5 equivalent full power days (EFPD), almost exactly its design life-time of 900 EFPD, when the plant was shut down permanently on October 31, 1974. Gaseous fission product release and the activity of the main circulating loop remained significantly below the limits allowed by the technical specifications and the levels observed during operation of Core 1. The low circulating activity and postirradiation examination of driver fuel elements have demonstrated the improved irradiation stability of the coated fuel particles in Core 2. Irradiation data obtained from these tests substantiate the performance predictions based on accelerated tests and complement the fuel design effort by providing irradiation data in the low neutron fluence region.

Simulator program for the MCS-80 8080 CPU. [MCS80SIM, runs on CDC-7600 computer]

The Intel 8080 CPU simulator program (MCS80SIM) provides a software simulation together with simulator execution commands to aid in program development for the MCS-80. Besides accepting 8080 machine code the simulator allows manipulation of the simulated memory and 8080 registers, breakpoint insertion, program tracing, symbolic and numeric dumps, single stepping, and other operations during the simulation. This report details how the simulator (MCS80SIM) is accessed and how it is run on the Octopus network at LLL. 2 figures. (RWR)

MCS80 Marco Assembler for the 8080 CPU. [Runs on LLL CDC-7600 computers]

The 8080 Macro Assembler is now available on the LLL 7600 system. This report is a user's manual for executing the 8080 assembler on the 7600 computers. The MCS80 program accepts as input programs written in Intel 8080 CPU assembly language. The program writes a magnetic tape in Intel BNPF format or BIN DEC binary format which can be used to punch a paper tape. 3 figures. (RWR)

A Proposal to Search for Charmed Particles Originating from the Interactions of 400 GeV/c Protons in Emulsion Nuclei (open access)

A Proposal to Search for Charmed Particles Originating from the Interactions of 400 GeV/c Protons in Emulsion Nuclei

There has been much recent discussion of the possibility of the existence of 'charmed' particles, hadrons which possess non-zero values of 'charm', a further additive quantum number. These particles may be generated either in the three triplet model of Han and Nambu or by the postulate of a fourth, charm-bearing quark. On the assumption that charm, like strangeness, is conserved in strong and electromagnetic interactions (the opposite assumption would necessitate charmed particles coupling strongly to ordinary hadrons and the existence of yet undiscovered states, e.g. Z*s) but not conserved in weak interactions one might expect their production either singly in neutrino interactions or in pairs in associated production in high energy hadron collisions, to be followed by their subsequent, relatively slow, decay into 'uncharmed' particles. Various estimates as to mass, lifetime, production cross-sections and decay modes have been made for these particles. However their failure to appear as di-lepton events among the neutrino interactions of the Brookhaven A.G.S. and CERN P.S. experiments might suggest that their masses are in excess of 2 GeV/c{sup 2} the other hand, such particles would have been expected to have been observed directly in bubble chamber studies at FNAL had their lifetimes been greater than …
