Swelling studies of vanadium and vanadium-1 wt % titanium alloy using ion simulation techniques (open access)

Swelling studies of vanadium and vanadium-1 wt % titanium alloy using ion simulation techniques

The void swelling of HPV and V-1 Ti has been investigated by irradiating the samples side by side with 3-MeV /sup 51/V/sup +/ ions to damage doses between 2.4 and 54 dpa at a temperature of 700/sup 0/C. Examination of the irradiated samples by transmission electron microscopy revealed that voids and dislocation networks had formed at 2.4 dpa in HPV and that swelling increased less than linearly with dose. In contrast, V-1 Ti showed negligible swelling even at 54 dpa. The swelling resistance of V-1 Ti to large doses is believed to be, at least in part, due to irradiation-induced precipitation.

Energy supply and demand in Texas for the period 1950--1973. Project S/D-1, final report (open access)

Energy supply and demand in Texas for the period 1950--1973. Project S/D-1, final report

The energy production and consumption data show a pattern of increased reliance on crude oil and natural gas as primary energy sources. Early production of coal diminished as natural gas became readily available. Hydropower has been developed at several multipurpose dam sites, but is less than one percent of the total Texas electric power capacity. Power plants have been fired primarily with natural gas, but recent developments have caused the substitution of fuel oil, and plans for new capacity include both nuclear and coal fired units. The trends in consumption of energy show several important factors in the economics of energy. Residential use of electricity has grown rapidly and was accompanied by large increases in per capita home heating and air conditioning and electrical appliances, and by a declining real price of electricity. Texas consumers also greatly increased their per capita use of gasoline during the 1950-1973 period with increases in the per capita ownership of automobiles and near constant real prices for gasoline. Both trends (electricity and gasoline use per capita) grew at a faster rate in Texas than for the U.S. The concentration of petroleum refining and chemical manufacturing industries in Texas has made these industries and the …

Sodium removal disassembly and examination of the Fermi secondary sodium pump (open access)

Sodium removal disassembly and examination of the Fermi secondary sodium pump

The Fermi secondary pump is a centrifugal single stage design. The pump had been operated more than 42,000 hours between 450 and 800/sup 0/F. Sodium was drained from the pump in 1973 and the system was back filled with carbon dioxide. The pump was fabricated for 2.25 Cr-1 Mo Croloy steel. Prior to cleaning the pump was inerted and heated with 150/sup 0/F nitrogen using the pump casing as the containment vessel. The water-vapor-nitrogen process was used in three increasing stages of water concentration. The hydrogen concentration in the discharge line was followed as an indicator of the sodium-water reaction rate. Upon completion of the hydrogen evolution, the pump was rinsed several times with hot water. Six pounds of sodium were removed from the pump during a process cycle of 79 hours including rinsing. The maximum pump temperature recorded was 175/sup 0/F with no variation exceeding 10/sup 0/F. The hydrogen concentration in the effluent provided a very satisfactory index for control of the reaction by adjustment of the water-vapor concentration feed to the system. Rinsing effectiveness was limited by a pool of water in the volute that was not drainable with the available system hook up. Sodium and its compounds …

ROUND-WIRE LAMINATED FLAT CIRCUITS (open access)

ROUND-WIRE LAMINATED FLAT CIRCUITS

Round-wire, laminated flat cables provide an additional manufacturing capability that is particularly suited for development applications and few-of-a-kind production. These laminated cables do not require the special tooling that is necessary for molded cables; therefore, cost and lead time are reduced. Layup, lamination, and contouring techniques were developed for complex cable configurations, including small-radius bends and multiple breakouts.

ULTRASONIC WELDING OF ELECTRICAL TERMINATIONS

Smooth weld tip and anvil surfaces are recommended; electrical discharge machining (EDM) surface finishes damage weld materials. Copper-to-aluminum samples showed no weld degradation following environmental tests. Materials must be of similar hardness to achieve high quality welds, and soft materials are sensitive to machine parameter changes.

PLATING ON POLYIMIDE (open access)

PLATING ON POLYIMIDE

Electroless coatings of nickel and copper from five electroless solutions were deposited on polyimide. Thicknesses approaching 90 microinches (2.3 micrometers) could be obtained but increasing the coating thickness beyond 90 microinches could only be achieved by electroplating. Four etching solutions for polyimides were investigated to determine their effect on the adhesion of the electroless coating to the polyimide.

EFFECTS OF VARYING FORMULATIONS OF THREE TDI POLYURETHANE FOAMS

Studies were conducted on three TDI polyurethane foam materials to improve production yields of molded-to-size parts. The effects of changes in cell. stabilizers, emulsifiers, catalysts, and the blowing agent were investigated. To evaluate formulation modifications, tests were performed to determine compressive strength, foam reactivity, and free-rise density. Changes in the visual appearance were also documented. Silicone surfactants were found to be superior to organic emulsifiers. In addition, an increase in water content produced parts rated superior to those produced by using the standard formulation for one material, Rigifoam 6003-2.5.

Patterns of Geothermal Lease Acquisition in the Imperial Valley: 1958--1974 (open access)

Patterns of Geothermal Lease Acquisition in the Imperial Valley: 1958--1974

Patterns for the development of geothermal resources in the Imperial Valley are analyzed, with particular consideration of corporate behavior in geothermal development. Actions of the companies were examined over a period of time to discover patterns of involvement, investment, and likelihood of further development. Discussion is presented under the following section headings: research organization; legal aspects; characteristics of development; location of geothermal leases; analysis of major leaseholders; and findings and conclusions. The addendum is entitled Federal Land Lease Sales: An analysis in terms of Lease Acquisition Patterns. The three appendices are: research methodology; a methodological note on the maps; and exploratory drilling sites. (JGB)

Radioactive zinc ( sup 65 Zn), zinc, cadmium and mercury in the Pacific Hake Merluccius productus (AYRES), off the West Coast of the United States

This report presents the results of analyses of several hundred Pacific Hake, Merluccius productus, for zinc (Zn), zinc-65 ({sup 65}Zn), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg). The fish were collected off the coast of the western United States in 1969--1972. In addition, some data from mercury analyses of fresh and seawater samples collected in 1970--1973 are presented. The contents of this report were used in the author's doctoral thesis. A majority (80%) of the hake samples were collected during July and August 1969, from 32{degrees}N to 48{degrees}N along the western coast of the United States. Most of the samples of Pacific Hake, Merluccius productus, were collected by Russian scientists on board PROFESSOR DERYUGIN, in collaboration with the US Bureau of Commercial Fisheries (now, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS)) in July and August 1969. Additional samples were collected by NMFS vessels, JOHN N. COBB, BARON AND COMMANDO, and by the Oregon State University of Oceanography CAYUSE and YAQUINA in 1969--1972. Location of sampling stations and a summary of data collected are presented. 5 refs., 2 figs., 5 tabs.
