Patterns for the development of geothermal resources in the Imperial Valley are analyzed, with particular consideration of corporate behavior in geothermal development. Actions of the companies were examined over a period of time to discover patterns of involvement, investment, and likelihood of further development. Discussion is presented under the following section headings: research organization; legal aspects; characteristics of development; location of geothermal leases; analysis of major leaseholders; and findings and conclusions. The addendum is entitled Federal Land Lease Sales: An analysis in terms of Lease Acquisition Patterns. The three appendices are: research methodology; a methodological note on the maps; and exploratory drilling sites. (JGB)

The intent of this design guide is to provide the engineer with the necessary information to produce a design for a workable installation. It contains a project scope, specific design information, and project control procedures. The desired process is to flash the geothermal brine to steam in three or four stages and transfer the steam heat energy to the working fluid circulating in closed loop. (MHR)

The void swelling of HPV and V-1 Ti has been investigated by irradiating the samples side by side with 3-MeV /sup 51/V/sup +/ ions to damage doses between 2.4 and 54 dpa at a temperature of 700/sup 0/C. Examination of the irradiated samples by transmission electron microscopy revealed that voids and dislocation networks had formed at 2.4 dpa in HPV and that swelling increased less than linearly with dose. In contrast, V-1 Ti showed negligible swelling even at 54 dpa. The swelling resistance of V-1 Ti to large doses is believed to be, at least in part, due to irradiation-induced precipitation.

The energy production and consumption data show a pattern of increased reliance on crude oil and natural gas as primary energy sources. Early production of coal diminished as natural gas became readily available. Hydropower has been developed at several multipurpose dam sites, but is less than one percent of the total Texas electric power capacity. Power plants have been fired primarily with natural gas, but recent developments have caused the substitution of fuel oil, and plans for new capacity include both nuclear and coal fired units. The trends in consumption of energy show several important factors in the economics of energy. Residential use of electricity has grown rapidly and was accompanied by large increases in per capita home heating and air conditioning and electrical appliances, and by a declining real price of electricity. Texas consumers also greatly increased their per capita use of gasoline during the 1950-1973 period with increases in the per capita ownership of automobiles and near constant real prices for gasoline. An automatically controlled electrical heating system was developed to heat specific components of a compacting system for the production of explosive pellets. The electrical heating system was designed for application in a hazardous environment.

Progress is reported in a number of projects related to process chemistry, chemical technology, chemistry instrumentation, and pilot plant development, as well as miscellaneous staff projects.
