Gain of laser fusion pellets
The gain of thermonuclear pellets containing a pusher-tamper of high density high-Z material surrounding the DT fuel is considered. Other significant characteristics of such capsules are briefly mentioned. (MOW)

Materials selection and corrosion problems
Data tabulated for chemical composition of geothermal waters are presented for four areas of interest in Nevada: Beowawe steam well and Beowawe Hot Spring, Buffalo Valley Hot Springs, Kyle Hot Springs, and Leach Hot Springs. Material recommendations were prepared for the Nevada geothermal well. A detailed field corrosion test program planned for the Nevada test well is included. A progress report is presented for a laboratory research program on velocity effects in corrosion. (MHR)

PREFERENTIAL INHIBITION OF THE GROWTH OF VIRUS-TRANSFORMED CELLS IN CULTURE BY RIFAZONE-82, A NEW RIFAMYCIN DERIVATIVE
Rifazone-8{sub 2} (R-8{sub 2}), a new rifamycin derivative, is shown to preferentially inhibit the growth of virus-transformed chick cells in culture. Macromolecular synthesis and glucose uptake of transformed cells are also appreciably decreased in the presence of low concentrations of R-8{sub 2} where the normal cells appear unaffected. While R-8{sub 2} is shown to be a selective inhibitor of RNA-directed DNA polymerase in vitro, its action on the growth of transformed cells may involve some other mechanism.

Scaler modules for radiation detection systems
In developing radiation detection instrumentation at Rocky Flats, a system concept using plug-in modules was planned. Losses of operational time due to maintenance are drastically reduced as a malfunctioning module can be replaced within minutes. Versatility is another advantage of the modular concept and a particular module can be used in many different system designs. A significant cost savings in system development can also be realized. The scalers described are housed in one-wide Nuclear Instrumentation Bin (NIM-BIN) modules. The design incorporates the latest in COS/MOS (complementary symmetry metal-oxide semiconductor) integrated circuitry, featuring low power, low cost, and high reliability. These inodules were developed specifically for radiation detection systems. Model 24370-31 is used in gross alpha detection systems. Model 27213- 30 appears in a medical wound-counter system, but can be used also in a gamma spectrometer system, or in other related systems. Operational procedures and servicing of units are included. (auth)
